Just curious, what is you music creation process? Do you start with the drums, bass and then the melody or the other way around?

It would be cool to hear some other musician techniques if you do not mind sharing for the benefit of all here.

I think, there is no composers in history who always used same creation process. It depends from skills, genre, mood, goals, ideas, everything. Though, starting composing from the composition (structures of all types) itself is good idea.

Also, you can make music from improvisation, or from careful planning, or from imitation of some sound patterns you've heard. There are many ways, and every way is right.

Music is Art, and there's no instructions to Art. Sure, everything depends on what you're working on. The NES is a peculiar medium so it's certain it will influence a bit of how you create, but like any other Art (music, drawing, programming, building things, talking, making a movie or a poem etc etc etc, everything in life!) there still some kind of 'rules' to observe (especially when it involves security/politeness) but except for that you're free of what you're doing, and because of that, there are so many way of doing things.

Thus, the best way for you to compose music is yours.

Animation is art but there are still methods that most animators follow with each cartoon they create. Although I realise that music is all about feeling the moment I`m sure that many musicians must follow a similar pattern of creation for each piece. Maybe I`m wrong.

Well... it really varies for me, esp on what kind of music I am writing.

For NES music, sometimes I will start by writing melodies/basslines/etc on a piano. Sometimes it'll just be on my keyboard as I'm programming it.

For cool sounds/sound design - study other people's songs on how they make the sounds, or experiment!

If you are looking to write a certain kind of song, study some other people's songs that are similar to what you are looking to do.

----------------------------------------
Questions:

Do you write music besides NES?
How much music training/knowledge do you have?

It's Drums then bass, then the daunting part is the melody. Writer's block is a total bitch indeed, you hear these other musicians pulling off unexpected progressions and you're thinking "why I didn't I think of this??!!"

Sometimes I don't leave the house without my Nintendo DS, I put my hunches on KORG-DS10

All day yesterday I've canvassed every store all over town trying to find the Games N'Music Flash Cart and no luck, so I can use NitroTracker.

Interesting that you (Withdraw) do the drums first, then bass...

I always do the melody first, then write chords around that, to which I write a bassline. Then I write the drums last to fit the rhythm of the piece.

I think that the melodic line is the most important, which is why I work on that first. The melody is what people focus/remember most (usually)...

Korg DS10... I really gotta buy that... next paycheck....
