As you should be able to notice by the title, this is a cover of the Temple Level from Donkey Kong Land. I stumbled upon this song during a normal run around YouTube, and decided to cover it with the VRC6.
Comments and criticisms are very much appreciated!

Neat! Donkey Kong Land soundtrack holds a very special place in my heart <3. This is a pretty good cover.

I don't really like how you started the second phrase a beat early (up from 2C to 28). It seems like it's just different for difference's sake, or you just weren't listening closely enough. Also, I feel like it's a bit of a waste of channels to cut off the lead line at the loop point just to mirror what the first two pulse channels are doing. I think it'd be cool to have a final lead note fade out before switching to the echoes. Maybe the Pulse 1 and 2 could have a bit more feeling in them somehow? I don't really know what I mean by that, but... anwyay...

Other than that I think it is pretty cool.

I cannot nitpick this cover / remix very well since I am not very familiar with the original. But what I can do is that I can mention is that I think that the Pulse 2 VRC6 channel is a little too loud between Frame 02 - 09, I would suggest a volume level of somewhere around 4-6. Other than that I just cannot find much wrong with this one.

This is a great cover / remix thing, very well made. Sounds a whole lot better than the original (probably because you used 4 more channels ;D).

Yeah, there were 3 Donkey Kong Land games for the original GameBoy. Also, the first Donkey Kong Country was ported to the GameBoy Color. It reused most of Donkey Kong Land's music, since a good bit of it consisted of DKC covers.

Thanks! I never expected this, but I really appreciate it.

Ha ha ha, this brought back memories of playing this on the ol' gray brick, immediately when I heard the lead melody.

This is great! Do you plan on adding anymore songs from Donkey Kong Land in the future?

Well, I kinda want to cover Kremlantis. I may, I may not.

The story for Donkey Kong Land was that somebody accused the developers of DKC of relying on graphics to sell the game, and they wanted to prove that it could be successful even with low-detail graphics. :P

Personally, I love the Gameboy versions of the music above all else (except the Aquatic Ambience theme) but that's just my preference and childhood talking. I feel like some of the chord inversion choices are a bit off, but that's probably just based on the chords that I imagined in my head when listening to the song.

Biting my tongue because I could nitpick this so much, being a huge fan of the original with many hours spent listening to it, but I feel like this wasn't made for people like me (I haven't even used expansion chips in any of my famitracker projects), and it'd all be really unimportant things anyway (For example, when the main melody plays the second time the pulse 1 and 2 echoing feels too smooth and the echo doesn't seem to stand out enough to me. I feel like the notes should be a bit more stacatto. It'd just be silly stuff like that).

I'd love to hear your take on Kremlantis, though. Love that one.

I always liked the Donkey Kong Land takes of the DKC themes. This one sounds a lot different than the SNES version, but in a good way. You can still hear the SNES melody in a few places, but other than that, it's a fresh new song that I personally think is more fitting for the level. I especially liked your cover, which makes me wonder how this would sound in DKC form.

Oh! The Sky levels theme would be great! Also the Construction theme.

Going back and playing DKC after having played DKL, it's mind-boggling to see how DKL was able to create these catchy melodies based on the ambient atmospheric themes from DKC. Temple Tempest especially stands out to me. Also the Cave theme (just occured to me) which goes from an ambient drippy sparse marimba music to a funky jazzy groove.

Anyway, yeah, I'd love to hear more DKL remixes from you.

Yeah, Dave Wise I'll say was just as much as a genius as the Follin brothers, but he just had access to more advanced chips. =P And I would also love to see the Cave theme, and maybe the title theme as well, though that sounds too similar to the SNES version. But it's your time and your work, do as you wish. =D

I hate to be the guy to ask a stupid question, but what is hardware recording, and what's the point of it?

I mean, famitracker exports .wav's. And from what i understand, isn't famitracker designed to replicate the sound that the hardware would make?

Famitracker, and emulators in general are designed to imitate the Famicom audio hardware (or whatever the target platform of a given emulator is) as close as possible, but no emulation is perfect. N163 emulation, for instance, isn't really spot on yet (mainly due to the fact there's no documentation for it anywhere other than reverse-engineering), and the VRC7, while it's gotten better in 0.4.0 and later, still isn't quite there yet. FDS isn't anywhere near perfectly accurate, but that's being worked on. VRC6 and MMC5, on the other hand, are pretty much spot-on. 5B almost always suffers from a botched emulation (again, that's mostly due to the fact very little documentation exists that explains what features the 5B provides exactly).

There's not really any "point" to recording NSFs on the hardware that you're actually composing for when you use Famitracker, just as much as there's no real "point" in helping yourself to a copious seven-serving meal when you could easily satiate your hunger with a can of baked beans.

I'm probably the only guy outside Japan with the necessary equipment to render NSFs that use expansion audio, so I make it a point of honour to share hardware renders of tunes I think are better than average (assuming I have the time to do it), as well as take requests for hardware renders for those who actually care to find out how their music sounds when played on a Famicom and a real Lagrange Point cart, or an Akumajou Densetsu cart, or whatever.

Alright, understood. I wasn't aware the expansions weren't ~100%. If the actual results on hardware are different than what you'd hear playing it back within famitracker, then it is a curious gift you're giving to composers.

I suppose i never thought about it that way. I'm using famitracker because i adore the music, but I've never considered actually putting it onto a cart, or even that it would sound any different coming from there.

It's interesting stuff, that's for sure. Thanks for clearing that up.
