Alright, I think I have procrastinated long enough on this post, here we go!

*Kaboom!* Mega post in yo' faces!

Greetings, yet again fellow tracker(-er?)s! It has been far too long (almost a freaking year!!) since I actually posted any music to this site with the exception of a few short and bad loops.

Since last time I posted, I unfortunately have not been very diligent in my use of Famitracker, I totally blame school for my own laziness, but I digress, I have been very bad at making stuff. This is a little batch of covers and one original (*gasp*) that I have made during the span of a few months. These are of course not the only things I made during that time but these are the ones I like the most (and that are actually finished).

Onto the goodness, I guess.

[li]Magician - Lake (Track 5) by Neil Baldwin: There is just not enough Neil Baldwin on this forum, and this song is fantastic so I combined the two. I went for an "as close to 100% as I can bother without tearing out my hair or spending 3 weeks on a single cover" cover (ACT100%AICBWTOMHOS3WOASC-cover, really catchy), as I do with most of the covers I make.[/li]

[li]The Immortal - (Track 2) by Rob Hubbard: Hmm.... I think it is partly due to Rob Hubbard's display of triangle goodness and skill in this soundtrack which caused me to fall in love with the triangle channel. Now every time I hear the triangle channel being used for melodies I instantly smile. Freaking love that stuff! How is this soundtrack not that well known though!? It is in my opinion one of the best on the NES![/li]

[li]The Immortal - (Track 11) by Rob Hubbard: This track I intentionally did not try to make 100% since I wanted to try how low I could get the BPM and still have it sound roughly right. Maybe this is a stupid idea, but I thought it was kinda fun.[/li]

[li]Esper Dream II - Mount Crystal (Track 3) by Shigemasa Matsuo: This loop is awesome! It is short and very atmospheric. My cover is just slightly too slow and those echoes and vibratos were a pain in the ass to recreate, but I think did a decent job on this one. I can never ever get that tempo right though, I always have the wrong speed and then after covering almost the entire song I realise it but at that point I just have to stick with it (I was just a couple BPM off this time, as I usually am).[/li]

[li]Mellow by Curious: Aaaaannd now here is the last and the worst track of them all, mine. You can read most of my thoughts and opinions in the .ftm file's comment. I can add that even though I think this song gets outclassed by every single tracker(-er?) out there (yes, even the new ones) I feel that this is the best thing I have made on my own right now and that posting it here and hearing your opinions on it will help me make better ones in the future. Just looking at all the cool stuff you guys can put out (still including the new ones here) frequently and mind blowingly good sounding is beyond my comprehension. I guess it is just something you learn by practice. I have such a difficult time actually getting what I hear in my head into the program (but I feel that that was much easier with this tune for some reason). But I do like this tune even though I hate it. Parts of it actually sounds pretty good and the overall feel of the tune is somewhat okay. As per usual, the creator is very self-critical of his own work so, what do you think?[/li]

Is this post way too long for people to actually read? Is it ok to upload tracks in groups of five? I do not wish to flood (yeah, right....) the forums with posts or to keep necro-bumping old threads. Is five tracks too many for a group upload, should I split them up? Should I make my own forum topic which I just necro-bump to oblivion? Gah! Too many questions!

TL;DR: Just listen to the .ftms and give me some of that constructive criticism, especially on “Mellow”.

EDIT: Ah! WHY!? The attachments rearranged themselves! Now they do not match the post and I cannot bother with fixing it! Fuuuuuuu.....!

EDIT 2: *Sigh* I just discovered that in Mellow one of the volume levels for one of the kicks was wrong, it should be right now. It was the last kick in frame 23, it should have had the volume level of F but instead had B. There are probably some more minor errors like that which I have not spotted yet.

Why does my posts seem to get so freaking long all the time!? I probably should stop adding so much filler and start getting to the point.... wait.... isn't this....!? Oh, dammit!

These are all really great. That's all I really have to say. You have done Mr. Hubbard's and Mr. Baldwin's music justice.

EDIT: and "mellow" is a hell of a lot better than anything I could ever write (delicious pulse switching BTW).

(Also, I gave you some arps and made those trikicks a bit shorter and thumpier)

Oh, thank you. I am kinda annoyed that these covers are not more accurate though, but as I have said before I do not wish to work on a single cover for too long or tear out my hair, so I have to live with it.

I would have to disagree, I think you write a whole lot better music than I could ever do. (I did not even realise I even did those pulse switches, I just did stuff that I thought would sound good.)
(Also, I gave you some arps and made those trikicks a bit shorter and thumpier)
Regarding the arps, I did not want to use seperate instruments for them, but I probably should have used some cycle changes though. And I liked how the Rxy command sounded on regular arpeggios. ;D. But these arps sound great.

As mentioned in the comments on Mellow, I cannot make good sounding drums so I just knicked the ones that I liked, and those happened to be Neil Baldwin's fantasticly hard-hitting drums from Hero's Quest. I probably should learn how to create decent sounding ones myself. ;P

I quickly put together this edited version to see how duty cycle changes sounded with the arps that I used. I am kinda split on how it sounds. Maybe it sounds a little bit better, but I am not certain.

I also made another version with the edits you suggested (I just made the arpeggios a little bit faster). I am still not sure which one I like the most, your version, my original, my edited version or the last one.

Also, why does the attachments not like "-", capital letters or even spaces? It is kinda annoying.

Mellow is a great track, have a little faith in yourself Love the triangle in this. Also I think your Arp2 version sounds best.

OMG that esper dream track.....It is all because of that exact song that I started using those DPCM drums. Been using them in my tracks for a while now. But I will change that so0n. Maybe.

+1 on the forums renaming the file names. very annoying.

I hope you guys and girls do not mind a little necro-bump.

I just submitted a slightly modified version of this song to the Summer Chip III competition hosted by BotB. So, I think it is appropriate for me to upload that version here, in the old thread.

If you want a reason why I would submit this song is because I just spontanously decided that I would enter it into a competition to see where people thought it deserved to be placed. I know the competition in this Summer Chip is absolutely crazy so I do not expect to get very high up but my curiousity got the better of me so here I am. Maybe I am very stupid for even trying to compete with the "big guys" but I did this for fun to see how absolutely massively stomped I will get.

I am horribly anxious to see where I place in this competition. My guess is somewhere around the low end, probably around the bottom 75%.

Good luck to all who entered!

EDIT: Link to the entry incase someone actually have urge to check it out on BotB.

Hello again! (Sorry for bumping this thread once again :P)

Since I cannot edit the original post about entering "Mellow" into the BotB Summer Chip III competition I thought I might aswell tell you where it placed and my thoughts on the whole thing. (You can read a bit more here if you'd like.)

First of all, it placed 82nd out of 231 entries (top 35.5%?!) and got 17th out of 38 in the nsfplus category. Holy freaking donkey on a bicycle train, I never thought it would place so high up especially since it was only 2a03; I think almost every nsf song other than mine used some kind of expansion chip. I had no idea that people "liked" it that much.

Secondly, the voting, atleast in this compo, seemed very weird. Many of my favourite tunes placed waaaay too low, even lower than mine at times(!?!?), while seemingly troll-y and / or "bad" entries got positions very high up either due to them being made by a well-known artist or being "hilarious" in some way. Since I have not been around the community for a long time I cannot tell if this was just some random fluke or if this is actually how the results usually go. (I am probably obsessing over the rankings too much anyway. It's not like you win anything by placing higher or lower.)

I do not regret the "spur of the moment" decision I made after hearing commandycan's wonderful "Relic" on YT to enter this competition. Thanks to that pseudo-random decision I got introduced to the great community of BotB and it's irc. I also got more feedback on my song, which I did not get a lot of here, but that is my fault for bunching up an original with 4 mediocre covers.

I enjoyed this little thing, I would have even if I did not place as highly as I did. Congratulations to everyone who entered!
