Yes, you should use the stable release to compose, and the beta to test. What I do is I use the stable release to make my serious stuff (contest entries, covers and originals I plan to finish, and so on), and I use the beta to listen to FTMs I find on the forum and elsewhere, and to make simple stuff I don't plan to save or publish.
I use the beta for everything at the moment (except for those dreaded 5B FTMs), mainly for testing purposes, and I haven't really experienced anything wrong about it. However, both DjJizzer5 and jrlepage are right in my opinion, you should stick more to the 0.4.2 stable version if you are composing stuff, and maybe for that hiss removal hack in the case you don't want the Namco chip to destroy your ears. Either way, go for the one you feel most comfortable with.
Well... I don't really know what to say, I didn't know that was jsr's recommendation nor I ever thought it that way. I actually use the beta to compose, and that can be useful at times because testing takes place everywhere in the program. I haven't experienced any issues so I think I'll keep that way, but people should just use the one they like the most.
Well the main potential "issue" with composing with the beta is that you face the risk of a random crash, or something going horribly wrong, and if it does happen, then you're pretty much on your own because the beta is essentially an unsupported build.
I remember that happened to me a lot with the 0.3.8 beta versions but I wanted to test the Namco chip at the time. I should have realized before about the risks I'm facing by doing things this way though, so thanks.
I guess I'll stick with 4.2 than! Thanks! I can be more patient for it.
But does the "anti-hiss" hack that I got affect the NES-insert and NSF and anything at all? Or it doesn't harm anything, except that it doesn't work with SB5 yet about insert NES?
The anti-hiss hack doesn't affect anything, except for that annoying Namco hiss. Only the tracker is affected by it, which means you can export anything just fine. I don't remember where it was released though, and I think you have to set a hidden registry key in order for it to work, but I'm not too sure.
Uh, and what's SB5? Didn't you mean S5B? The 0.4.2 version itself lets you enable the S5B expansion via the text import feature but you can't save modules, you can only export text with it, so that's why there's a hack which includes both the hiss removal and the option to enable the S5B expansion (and saving modules with it, but you can't export NSF) in the thread you posted in yesterday in the "Show off your work" subforum. Here's that thread.

Okay...so it's perfectly safe to put the anti-hiss hack into the official one, and no problem, not even corruptions, bugs, and any problems, just 100% safe, like the official one with hiss, but without hiss expansion? That's great! :D (Will it work with 4.3 official if there ever is one? or just 4.2, just to make sure. ^^; )
Oh...by save module, it means I have to load the text in there everytime I open it to use S5B expansion?....wait...so NSF doesn't work, but it's save on.......regular Famitracker or the provided Famitracker that "doesn't save modules" on "but you can't save modules"
It's a hacked version. Removes the hiss and since it's something so little in terms of coding, there's not really any chances of something going wrong in case you don't touch the S5B expansion at all, so you can use it as normal, don't worry.
jsr disabled the ability to import text containing the S5B expansion in the new beta, and therefore, in the next versions as he stated in the first page of this thread. Use the version I linked to if you want to save S5B modules and have no Namco hiss. You can't export S5B NSFs so you would have to wait until it's supported by FamiTracker in order to do so, or use PPMCK, which actually has support for all expansions, but you have to build the music in MML (I don't know exactly how this works though).
This hacking won't work in future versions (because it a one-version hack!), but if Slimeball or other people want to hack the upcoming versions of FT, then you can be pretty sure there's going to be newer versions available which will have the hiss disabled, but I don't know about S5B.

Yay! :D
Awwwww....I see.....Thanks for the link! ...MML?
Aww...Ooooh..I get it. Thanks! (Although I wish there was NSFtracker for Namco.)
Look, the Namco expansion is oficially supported by FamiTracker so you can compose and export your NSFs just fine. PPMCK is an alternative if you prefer MML but if you feel comfortable with FamiTracker, then just make your music in it and then export it to NSF if you want. S5B is not supported yet, so for that you need PPMCK, but for Namco 163 you can use FT.

I meant NSF Importer. It supported only 3.7, and it allows you to import NSF music into it. Sorry. ^^;
Okay. I get it. Thanks you so much. ^^ Sorry for confusion.
Oh, yeah, it's not in development anymore, so there's not much you can do if you want to see N163 NSFs in FamiTracker, but in NSFPlay you can slow down playback and see what the keyboard is playing, along with more stuff. Get NSFPlay (there's a thread here with the latest version), and find the "Keyboard" feature. There you can slow down playback and see the notes, which should help with N163 NSFs since you can't import them into FamiTracker.
More good news about NSFplay (I'm not quoting directly, and I'm not sure if rainwarrior even said this, but...). Part of the plan with NSFplay is to get it to export text in the Famitracker format, so all those N163 NSFs you want to disect may eventually be able to just be natively imported into a future stable version of FamiTracker.
