If any Famitracker veteran here could help me over skype, that would be most helpful. I have played around Famitracker for many years but have always left the application due to intimidation of other veterans, i.e. Dannoct1, rushjet. I am very eager to try my own songs but the tutorials on Famitracker wiki aren't helping me much, but it is very informitive on effects! Also if you use any other software to really dwell on an .NSF file, that information could be of use.
Skype: sean.j117

Thank you!

Have you seen any of the YouTube video how-to's on FamiTracker? I was watching one the other day that described in good pace and detail the process of covering an existing song, which seems a great place to start to learn. Having said that, I've never successfully tracked a song myself...I'm more a tool dude. Good luck.

Unfortunately I can't YouTube while at work otherwise I'd find the cover tutorial and link it.

You should never get intimidated by others because their skills are superior than yours. That also happened to me and it's really a big let-down when it comes to tracking your music. Seeing other people are more skillful should be really a reason to challenge yourself to get better than them, rather than being a reason to be sad.

The best way to learn is to study other peoples modules. And of course, the boring 'Practice practice practice' comment.

Trust me, no one is a veteran without first being a no0b. That being said, I wish you luck and hard work.

Thank you all for the support, but I still don't know how even the best of the best do it! Do they use software besides, Famitracker? Should I do it by ear only? Where should I start: covers, or original?

For me, covers are the easiest, but for the people who can compose rather easily, I'd say that originals are the way to go. It really depends on what you're good at! As for doing it by ear, it's how most people do it here, and it is generally frowned upon when you copy off of someone else's MIDI or module, or if you import the original song and copy the patterns.

Though I know that rushjet1 and danooct1 both intimidate you, there's no reason to be! Besides, rushjet's usually pretty helpful and danooct1 has a great tutorial series (though it uses an older version, so it doesn't have all the new features, but you really shouldn't need those!). Personally, though they have almost no tolerance for n00bs messing around (especially danooct1), if you ask them politely, they will certainly help you out!

I know for a fact that Fezuke has plenty of experience with FL Studio and guitar, and that jrlepage, HertzDevil (here known as nicetas_c), and rushjet1 have been using many of these kind of programs (trackers, MML, etc.) for ages, and that most people here have experience with real instruments. I personally have experience with Anvil Studio, GXSCC, Audacity, and piano. So yes, most of these people use software besides.

If you want to study an NSF, then use rainwarrior's NSF Import tool, if you want to see the actual song output. Do *not* pass off an FTM generated with this tool as your own work - people have been banned over this, if I recall correctly. If you want to listen to songs over and over and over, I suggest an NSF player that supports rewind, like NSFplay 2, also by rainwarrior. Which reminds me, if you need any technical help, rainwarrior and jrlepage are both terrific in this respect.

If you need anything, just post something here and people will be all over you to help. Trust me. And even if you don't need help, post your songs (which you should continually make) here. People may sometimes be harsh about it (hahaha people here harsh? Bull-) but don't be discouraged. And usually we will post some constructive criticism which you can use to improve your skillz. And then maybe you can be l33t like rushjet1 and danooct1.

Off-topic: jrlepage didn't say what's in your signature, poodlecock, but something to that effect.

On-topic: you have nothing to fear from others, no matter how much more experience they may have, F34RI355. It's like saying that you're intimidated by your professor's having the answer key to your exams, so you're dropping out of college.

The best thing to do is to study the works of others, like Fezuke said (& to Fezuke; is your avatar Super Trollio grabbing his skin flute?!). That's what I've done with the works of such people as nicetas_c, rushjet1, tssf, jrlepage & Mex. Some people actually think I'm decent with my music, but I actually feel that I have plenty of room to improve since I'm just a casual user who doesn't have time to use FamiTracker every day.

I first started with my own original (a set of over 20 songs) back in 2009, before coming up here. But, my first post was actually an attempt at covering Clubbed To Death (Kurayamino Mix). Then, I made another covers before starting to study what the other guys have done.

Here are a few attachments (practically all of the songs I've done & contributed to since I started (I wish I kept the FTM file for run_with_us.nsf). You'll see how I progressed over time & hopefully, you can learn from some of the stuff in here, just to help you feel less intimidated.
HertzDevil (here known as nicetas_c)
Also banned.
jrlepage [...] [has] been using many of these kind of programs (trackers, MML, etc.) for ages
Well, five years really, in my case. I think Rushjet1 started a couple of years before I did. Pretty sure HertzDevil started later though.
Do *not* pass off an FTM generated with this tool as your own work - people have been banned over this, if I recall correctly.
That has never happened. People posting other people's FTMs and claiming them as theirs have been banned in the past, but never has anyone posted an imported NSF and pretended they made it.
Which reminds me, if you need any technical help, rainwarrior and jrlepage are both terrific in this respect.
I know that's not exactly what you said, but I'll still tell you the same thing I told someone else recently: never give any forum member (particularly new members) specific instructions to contact me or any other forum member directly for any reason whatsoever, like it's the normal thing to do. If anyone needs help, the forum is there for that, and if I, rainwarrior, jsr or anyone knowledgeable feel they have relevant information to provide, they'll do so.
