Hi guys! I wrote an album - my first time doing anything like this. It's an all-gear album that combines NES 2a03 channels with DX7 and other retro sounds. So it isn't nsf/FamiTracker, though I did sample sounds out of Fami to make it, and it is quite big on chiptune techniques and aesthetics you'll all be familiar with.
It has been released via Ubiktune/Bandcamp, free or pay what you want: http://ubiktune.com/releases/ubi066-blitz-lunar-triptunes http://blitzlunar.bandcamp.com/album/triptunes
Some other places I've tried to conquer:
Truly excellent. Nice blend with the all gear. Everything fits. Really really good stuff. I'm buying this as soon as I'm done posting this. :D
Very kind of you, cheers! Yeah I felt like doing something other than straight-up NSF, if for no other reason than I had no ideas for a pure NSF release, felt I've done all I want to with NSF for now. I think it worked well, it's definitely an approach I'd try again in future.
The complexity of these songs is astounding.
Aye, some of them are pretty intricate. The last song is a reference to that (and other things) since I've alienated some people with my music in the past for that reason. One point I wanted to make with this album is that writing technically isn't about being the best (I've come to realise it's almost the opposite of that; a fixation that we aren't ever good enough and should do better) but that it's ultimately just expression, no more or less valid than anything else. Sooo yeh... personally I love detailed music and it's just how I myself usually choose to work, but it always come from somewhere visceral and emotive~
You realize nobody wants to pay if it's available free.
So you might think, but so far it has had 95 purchases (and 493 downloads total.) There's some very generous people in the world. I suppose if one lives and works, they don't think much of spending a few bucks, plus it makes people feel good to do that, good for the conscience and the soul I suppose, to know you did something kind and generous. Anyway, the important thing for me was that people could have the music, I wanted it to reach as many ears as possible and setting a minimum price would have created a barrier and it'd have been counter-productive. Then there's other philosophical reasons for why I thought this album really ought to be available free, too, considering its theme. Maybe I'll set a minimum price on future albums, though I'm not even convinced it'd perform better. Maybe the people who are gonna pay are just gonna pay... hard to know without a crystal ball!
I've already voiced my opinion on Twitter but I may as well say it here as well; when I listened to it yesterday I felt like doing nothing else but listening to it. I wasn't doing work, I wasn't talking to anyone, I was distracting myself and listening to the music.
I loved it! It's not stuff I'm gonna make myself, but it's stuff I'm always keen on listening to. Will stick a few tracks on my phone, for sure.

Amen to that; so many people just do things because they want to look & feel like they're the best at it, instead of just doing things for the fun of it. Honestly, writing technically is about being the worst at it so that you can learn from whatever mistakes you make (& that's what makes things fun).

very cool album. about 8 seconds in to "Child Play Zone" i love the slow two note lead-in before the song takes off. kind of like a pregnant pause i guess. very amusing and cool.
