It's definitely one of the more challenging Zelda games. Not as brutal as the Adventure of Link, but still.

Oh ho ho! Zelda 2 to me is Mario's Early Years: Preschool Fun to everybody, just like Ninja Gaiden on NES as well.

I usually save at every door I come across, and after every significant event. I'm more than halfway through, and have died multiple times, but they don't register because I constantly save (also, it gives me room to know what possible death scenarios I could come across so I can avoid them).
