So I saw another post somewhere on here with some guy showing his first creation with Famitracker, which was a cover of the Cave Story theme in 2A03. That made me think that I wanted to do something from Cave Story as well, so I made one of my favorites, which was the Egg Corridor music. After making that, I decided that I wanted to do more than that, so I did the Cave Story theme myself. (EDIT AGAIN: I just noticed that I'm missing like half of the song. I'll get on it when I get my controller fixed. -_-)

After making both of those, I decided that I wanted to do the whole soundtrack, and there's a lot of it.

Throughout the course of this cover, I will be using mostly Pulse 2 for the bass line, and the Triangle for toms and bass drum. It's done in VRC6, so the rest should be pretty standard.

And so, as of this writing, I've finished one more song other than those two, and it's the outside music, Moonsong.

This is something that I will probably be doing throughout the course of my summer, so expect some progress. Whenever I think I'm finished with a song, I will update the single file on this post. So make sure that you change the name from Cave_Story (1) to Cave_Story to save space and stop clutter!

ALSO: I would like any criticism that you are willing to give, so threaten me with your corrections!

EDIT: As it turns out, my midi controller broke a few hours after making this post, so I won't be making any progress for a while. D:

As you've already stated, the Cave Story theme song is VERY incomplete; it's pretty nice, though.

The Egg Corridor music is very good! The only complaint I have with it is your DPCM instrument. An explosion effect? I think the original used the Noise channel to do that kind of sound. I don't know if making an "explosion" sound with the Noise channel is entirely possible without screwing up something else; I haven't listened to the song in a while, but maybe it uses two Noise channels?

As for your Moonsong cover, I don't really like it. The Main Theme and Mischievous Robot are very good, but Moonsong is not. I don't think the volumes are entirely correct: at some points I can't distinguish the main melody from the background ones. Your last frame isn't accurate, if I recall the original correctly.
I'm attaching a file in which I edited the last frame (09) and also changed the echoes from FRAME 02 (the echoes aren't bad, but I wanted to show you how I prefer them. Both ways are fine, I suppose!!)

Sorry if my English isn't clear (cause IT'S HORRIBLE).

Yup, the theme is far more from complete than I initially thought. :/

Thanks! I think that the DPCM sounds okay, if it were louder though, then it would be a problem. And yeah, it seems like all of the originals have at least two noise channels, which I obviously don't have, so there isn't much I can do about that other than pick the more important/louder part and use DPCM.

Yeah, I can see how the last frame in Moonsong might sound off, and volume control never was (and still isn't apparently) a strong point of mine. I'll compare both of these with the original and see what I can do.

Thank you.

What the hell is going on with the Fxx command in Mischevous Robot? That's not a technique I've seen before; what BPM is that making?

Okay, so now I've made a whole bunch of little changes to the Cave Story Theme, and a smaller number to Moonsong.

I've added the ending to the theme as well as changed some drums, but I'm a little on edge about the final frame in that, someone tell me if it's good or not.

As for Moonsong, I changed a few volumes here and there and I change the triangle from the repeated first two frames to another bass. Opinions on that, please. I've changed a few notes in the ending to make it more accurate with the original, but other than that most everything is the same.

I also started three more songs, and only managed to finish one of them because I'm lazy.

So on Tyrant, I have the cymbals but don't know if I can do the other noise effect in the background, again because of lacking a second noise channel. Does the triangle bass sound good, or should it be removed because it isn't in there all the time?

Please give me some criticism on these, if you can. Thank you in advance.

Hehe, oops. That was dumb of me. I was sure I added it...

Oh well, it's fixed now.

I notice that you seem to think the originals use multiple noise channels. I've worked with the format that Cave Story uses in the past, and I can tell you that it doesn't use noise channels at all.

The .org format used by Cave Story has 16 channels, 8 of them melody, 8 of them percussion. There are 100 different wave forms that can be used and something like 10-12 percussion instruments.

-

Anyway, your notes in Mischievous Robot don't sound right...
Checking it with the original file, I've identified the problem.
First of all, it's located in frame 8 on VRC6 Pulse 2 (which is set to its 5th pattern). (The melody part).

Your sequence of notes is (the dashes are just a spacer, don't worry about them):
C#4 G#3 C#4 F-4 --- D#4 D-4 C#4

The correct sequence is as follows (I've underlined changes made to it)
C#4 G#3 C#4 F-4 --- E-4 D#4 C#4

Your DPCM on the same song could also use some major improvement.
Other than that, it's very good.

Huh. I don't know very much about .org files to begin with. I never knew that.

And thanks! I'll see what I can do to improve it.
