I have a new computer which is much more powerful than the one I had before it, but Famitracker doesn't seem to want to run properly, and I'm sort of at a loss for why. I'm not sure what version I was running before, but I went from the current version down to .36 and it still doesn't run right.

It's set to run at all the default settings, so 60Hz is what it should be at. But when I click the performance window it stays between 50Hz and 53Hz. The sound is choppy and inconsistent with songs I've written that ran well in the past, on my previous machine.

Anybody have any suggestions or settings I can tweak? I'm running on Windows XP, Intel Core i5-3320M, 2.88 GB of RAM.

Windows XP on an Ivy Bridge Core i5?

I'm assuming you installed that yourself, so... Have you installed all of your system's drivers (assuming there are even XP drivers for your system)?

Otherwise you can try increasing the buffer length in the Configuration window.

Thanks Shywolf. I was actually just coming back on to say that messing with the buffer length made all the difference. It doesn't scroll through the notes visually nearly as smooth as it did, but the sound is right now and that's all that matters.

The computer is an HP Elitebook 8470p, so I didn't install any of the hardware myself.

Never say never... Samsung releases XP drivers for its Series 9 ultrabooks, which are ivy i7's bundled with Windows 8

I really can't imagine drivers would affect anything at all, seeing how FT is MFC (ugh) instead of OpenGL or whatever. That said, the only thing I can think of is trying a lower screen resolution, in addition to disabling window effects. That could potentially iron out any gpu-related issues.

Why am I not surprised about the misconception that people can't use XP on an i5? :P

As a matter of fact, some companies still offer i5 machines with a Windows XP downgrade licenses, though that's quite rare & would only occur if a customer requests more than 25 machines per sale (& such customers aren't consumers; they're typically industrial/commercial customers).

I was mainly surprised that he would run an eleven-year-old OS on brand-new hardware, rather than the technical possibility of it at all. I guess he has some specific reasons for doing so, though (as do the industrial mass-buyers that you mentioned).

Thanks for the welcome, Im_a_Track_Man.

And yeah; I guess that was a misconception on my part. :P

Mind you, it's a good thing to be able to run an older OS sometimes (especially if you're anything like me; too lazy to update your MS Office applications when you get a Windows 8 laptop). Which reminds me; all versions of FamiTracker since 0.2.2 work properly on my new Lenovo P580 laptop, with Windows 8 & a Sandy bridge i7 (& unlike OP, I haven't had to readjust the buffer length on any version of the program I've tried).

As for my runing Windows XP on the thing (which I do, using VMware,) I keep it because I've noticed some bugs in the way Filezilla FTP's shell extension works in Windows 8 (along with my being to lazy to re-pirate Office all over again). :P

inb4 anti-piracy warrant.

If there are performance issues then it's almost always related to the audio buffer size. I've never seen a case where CPU or graphics power hasn't been enough, at least not on current hardware.
