So I've been playing, and finished Sonic Advance 3 lately, and thought I should do a cover of the Ocean Base stage music. But upon playing further, I heard Twinkle Snow and said "Screw that!" out loud and got to working on this.
So I've gotten pretty much everything the way I like it, the only thing I can't get right is the twinkle part at frame 6 and 7. If anyone knows how to do that on the pulse 2 channel, please tell me how, because I have no idea.
Also, pitch slides.

It sounds interesting, not bad, but I don't think I'd take it over what I originally had.

The only other option I can think of at the moment is repeating the note at two or three octaves up, but you don't have enough channels for that.

I think I see what you're trying to do now, the way I worded it and the name of that instrument, but look at this, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvLNHF-kcHU) and skip to 0:40, you'll hear there what isn't in mine.

SOME SUBTLETY MIGHT HELP.... IT'S AWFULLY LOUD! :P

Joking aside, there is such a thing as moderation, and running every channel at max volume will almost always lead to an aural mess.

That said, if you can't listen to what's happening and find a suitable solution, try to find a tool that will help you separate the channels of the original track so you can better distinguish what's happening (any *good* player will allow you to mute individual channels).

Understanding the capabilities of the "hardware" you're working with is the key to getting it to do what you want. The more you work with it, the more ideas you will have when it comes to 'demaking' tracks like this that use more capable/advanced sound chips.

It's a kind of thing you can't force; it requires a certain finesse.

GBA music is annoying in that it's very hard to separate all the channels, because they're all playing through two channels - Direct Sound A and Direct Sound B

I never knew! How interesting.

Well then I guess my channel separation suggestion is invalidated. :P Sorry.

Heh heh, whoops. I'll see what I can do about this, it wasn't something that I noticed.

Okay, so I've adjusted the volume levels on some of the channels like you suggested, it does make the leads stand out a bid more I suppose.
That change is in there along with some more subtle changes that I needed to make from the original.

I don't know why the lead in frame 02 sounds detuned to me, since there's nothing that can affect it.

Leaving my problems aside, nice work! Still needs more volume adjustments, but your last update is a bit more pleasant. You have improved a lot since your arrival. Well done!

Maybe it's the vibrato?

It's the vibrato.

Sorry if I came off as a dick in my first reply - I didn't mean to, but rereading it, I could have been a little more tactful. Sorry for that. :\

I agree with Mr_Master; the update sounds better but still needs a little work. You might be concerned that it will sound too quiet if you start turning everything down (or maybe going through and editing all your volume levels seems a daunting task - god knows I understand that feeling :P), but I think you'd be surprised just how audible everything is in the 8 - C range.

You're not terribly far off, though; your samples aren't being drowned out that badly, and the bass is audible.

Sometimes your volume choices should be based on the octaves you're working in, too. Things in the 5th and 6th octaves sound MUCH louder than the same thing in the 1st or 2nd octave.

Good luck with that twinkly thing, though.... I'm not even sure what to suggest there. XD

Edit - I take that back; an instrument with a duty cycle macro of '| 2 1' comes pretty close. Maybe combining that with some 1xx/2xx commands will get you what you want.

Also - re-listening to the track I noticed a minor error in the tail-end (rows 38 - 3F) of the first lead:

G-5 02 F S05
A-5 02 - S05
G-5 02 - S05
F-5 02 - S05
E-5 02 - S05
D-5 02 - S05
A-4 02 - S05
G-4 02 - S05

should be

--- -- - ---
G-5 02 F S05
A-5 02 - S05
G-5 02 - S05
F-5 02 - S05
E-5 02 - S05
D-5 02 - S05
A-4 02 - S05

Kind of tricky and hard to catch, but there it is.

There are a couple of similar errors in the subsequent patterns, but I'll leave you to sort those out.
