Hey there, Famitracker and forum newbie TheNoblePirate here, and I figured I might as well make a thread to keep all of my current and future compositions, because why not? Since I have no idea what to name this thread, I'm just gonna cover all of my bases with that title. The less space I take up, the better, so I might as well make a thread that encompasses everything I make, that way I can just update this thread with whatever new things I come up with.

Anyways, for this first(and currently only) submission, I have "Greylight Industries", the first of many songs I'm planning on making for a group of friends on a certain cartoon's fansite. I consider this a WIP, although since it can pretty much stand on its own, I just made it Version 1. It is certainly rough, but for a first attempt at making an actual song, I don't think I did too terrible. I just need to get a hang of Famitracker more, and I'm sure I'll get better with practice.

The song sounds slightly better if you put P7F on pulse 1 and P81 on pulse 2, as you often play exactly the same note on all four channels (even if it is on different octaves, it still causes phasing issues sometimes).

It's good for a first song - lots of stuff going on, bass that walks around a bit, etc. and I especially love the modulation from pattern 03 to 04. The drums, while repetitive, have good sound design as they utilize multiple pitches and have clear roles.

I would suggest messing around with diads (two note chords), triad chords, arpeggios and slow multiple octave sweeping arpeggios, duty cycle changes at the start of notes, octave changes at the start of notes (esp on tri), pitch bending into the start of notes, vibratoing sustained notes, pitch bending out of fading out notes, etc. Basically, find every awesome ftm and nsf you can, and study the hell out of what makes it unique in nsf importer or nsfplay synthesia

Thanks for the comments. I'm well aware that I don't have the best grasp on effects quite yet, but I do enjoy experimenting, so I'll take what you said into consideration.

Also, yeah, I'm hoping that when I have some time, perhaps this weekend, I'll be able to carefully listen and read the various techniques that are used in other songs. This wasn't really made out of any studying, of course, merely by ear, but I'm sure by exposing myself to more different kinds of compositions, I'll be able to say, "Aha! That's the kind of sound I want to use. How can I recreate that?" and then I will. It's intimidating, to be sure, but I'm willing to try a variety of things if it means getting to make the music that I hear in my head.

Famitracker/nsf is unique in that it's VERY VERY easy to study anyone else's creation.
If it's an ftm, you can just load it up.
If it's an nsf, you can look at it in nsfplay synthesia's keyboard view or use nsf import - whatever cool trick they use to get their sound will be immediately obvious to the observant.
I definitely recommend doing it as often as possible

Or you're like me where you have an app on your iPad that can play .nsf files...except that files including the N163 Chip isn't on the list but is in the library somehow (?).

Nice little song. Although I admit it sounds very plain, my early stuff wasn't this good. Nice melody, everything fits together with everything. Try controlling your volume, play around with vibratos, duty cycles, and all that stuff and you'll see how things will start to change. You will get better by practicing(obviously!), but have a look at other people's FTMs too, as Patashu said.

I actually learned my techniques by twisting others techniques and giving them my own sound. There was a 6-month period where I didn't write a single thing(just doodly modules, to test things), and when I made some covers, I was incredibly good at the thing compared to what I was before.

[I still don't recommend you do this, since it will likely not work if you leave the tracker aside for a long time just to see the stuff people upload. It only works for me since I have a robotic mind control program which fails at given times...]
