My friend and I are making an old-school, Zelda-esque game in java, but we have no music. I came to the internets today searching for a solution and I found this promising little community.
I work best through reverse-engineering; I plan on learning how this program works by examining the work of others.

My question: is it considered 'bad form' to use instruments from songs posted by others on this forum?

Do you plan to make *.nsf player in java (it requires CPU, memory and sound hardware emulation)? If so, why not use simpler solutions like MOD/XM (there are ready-made players)? Or you plan to use MP3 output?

Using other's instruments is OK for beginners, but to make your own unique style and sound, and simply to make quality sound you must create your own instruments.

Naw, I'm going to export the music to .wav most likely.

Regardless of format, are you looking for original music that sounds like Zelda or actual Zelda music? I'm sure there are plenty of people here that would be willing to help write the music for you, if you don't want to make the whole soundtrack on your own.
