Made these for a game in development I'm writing music for.

Critique is welcome.

Well, it'd help if you tell us what exactly is your game about, because (& this is only my honest opinion,) both your songs sound a bit too random.

212.ftm has a good structure, but your lead track doesn't fit your bass at all.

27.ftm has the same problem, but it's also a bit catatonic; you need more variation in this one.

I agree with what Tech said; however in my opinion 27.ftm is far better than 212.ftm and you should learn from 27.ftm for your future songs. 212.ftm sounded as if it was constantly changing, and not in a good way; also lots of discord and note clashing in that one. 27.ftm had quite a bit less of those, was more consistent (at the expense of being somewhat repetitive), and I really liked it about halfway through when the VRC6 harmony kicked in. The loop was pretty smooth, too.

I can only give my opinion on how the music sounds, not its actual composition since I am not yet familiarized with Famitracker, so please take what I am about to say with a grain of salt.

In regards to 212, I was...confused. Every moment seemed to bring a new pattern that always falls flat, and even when I think that I know what's going to come next, it switches up entirely. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it sounds like it's far too many things at once. Also, each channel sounds like they are independent of one another, they don't harmonize or blend well with everything else. Primarily, the lead and bass, pulse 1 and 2, don't sound like they are doing anything together. It was actually slightly more pleasing to just mute one at a time, but that only makes it more apparent how often each one changes.

As to 27, this track was better, but that isn't saying much. I felt like it still had the issue of the melody not really having any sort of goal to it, it just is one thing, ends on a cliffhanger so to speak, and instead of delivering a conclusion just does something completely different. Sidenote, I imagine the general feel of the song to be used in some space themed game, don't know if that's what you were going for or not.

Overall, I kind of don't enjoy the music, but I think if you structure it differently, and/or change some notes here or there, it can come out sounding cleaner and with more...purpose, I suppose.

Thanks for the replies.

>it'd help if you tell us what exactly is your game about

It's a side scrolling rpg-action hybrid. I've already said too much! ;w;

>both your songs sound a bit too random.

That's been a long-term problem for me. I guess I have difficulty listening objectively, and my scatterbrains make sense of things in an inconvenient way.

Agreed on all points, thanks.

>Also, each channel sounds like they are independent of one another, they don't harmonize or blend well with everything else

Yeah in retrospect I think I was focusing on the individual melodies too much and not the overall harmony enough.

Ezno; for a song to accomplish exactly what you want in your game, you need to understand that every channel is linked to each other. Even though each channel has its own melody, each melody has to blend together in a way that sounds more pleasing to the ear.

It can be a challenge if you're completely new to music (regardless of whether or not you've had music lessons in the past).

Before you do anything for a large-scale project (like your Zelda 2 clone,) you need to take the time to familiarize yourself not only with FamiTracker itself, but especially with the way music works & how to take advantage of it (how to use it to control mood in specific settings, etc.). You might as well study the attachments here (it's something I'm working on for one of my own OSTs, but I license my OSTs under the MIT license so that anyone can do whatever the hell they want).

Sure, you can use this for your project, but I really recommend that you study it carefully & try to understand how each channel harmonizes with the others. Just ask yourself how each channel links to the other; what pattern is being followed; how a somewhat dark mood was achieved through the notes themselves & how they flow with each other.

Also note that there are plenty of better examples scattered across the entire forum.

Anyhow rather than make a new thread for these I'll just put em here.
Browsing the forum has made me realize just how far behind I am with my tracking skills, but hopefully these are an improvement.

I got some pretty varied responses where I'd posted these. The boss is pleased with them, but I know there's a lot more I can do with them if I were more familiar with the tracker.

The first two are using the Sunsoft instrument pack that's been posted around here.

I like these new songs with the Sunsoft pack a lot better than the original two you posted. They sound more consistent and planned out. The first two seemed a little scatter brained. By the way, where exactly did you find the sunsoft instrument pack?

Thanks Jimbleezy. I initially found them on Glitch King's cover of that Metroid II song, and saw them with a few others, and then found a blank .ftm with them in -I think- the instrument thread.

Well, Ezno, I can safely say that your 3 other attachments are a major improvement. Like Jimbleezy said, it's much more consistent & flows much better than the first 2 songs. All you need to do is keep on practicing; you'll learn more tricks as you do more songs & check out the techniques of different members.
