Hey, I have been here for a while and I figured I would finally post something for you guys.
These are just some fun little things I have made...
I enjoy arranging for NES - its fun to figure out how to handle the limitations of only having 3 instrument tracks and drums.
Also - I let me know what you think of my Mario 64 Endless stairs. I am curious what you guys think about how I have handled these songs.
I am working on a lot of other arrangements for newer Mario games, as well as Sonic, and another major project... I also write a lot of original music, but non of that is copywritten yet - so I can't post it around the internet.
-Pouch!
[EDIT - April 26]
I posted the 'Powerful/Wing Cap Mario' music from Mario 64, as requested by Dave. Dave, I'd be curious to hear yours...
I changed the name to reflect the nature of this thread. Since it is no longer "Mario 64" songs, the thread would be misleading.
Dragon roost island is a huge classic. Great to hear a nsf cover of it. It's too bad the triangle channel always sounds so off tune when playing those high notes. Not your fault, of course. I think you could try to add some slight vibrato to it though, it's supposed to emulate a flute after all...
hahaha awesome job with the endless staircase, i was worried that it'd be problematic in NSF due to the shepard scale, but I believe you've cracked it.
these covers are all nice, though a little bare bones if i may say - for instance, no strumming on dragon roost island, and other notes missing/incorrect lengths here and there, etc etc. however this may be because you wanted to recreate them in a simplistic way similar to the original NES games, as opposed to imitating every nuance in a Konami sort of way! Good job nonetheless \o/ would be interested in hearing your take on the "Powerful Mario" music, as I've already made an NSF of that myself.

No it isn't a classic. It is only considered a classic because it was put in Brawl. Good cover.
Well I suppose we could get into the semantics of the word, though I'm guessing what Dafydd effectively means is that it's one of the big memorable/noteworthy pieces of music from the Zelda franchise (and I certainly wouldn't argue with that.) Things can be 'instant classics' you know
Thanks for the replies. Yeah - the Shepard scale, I was curious if it would work - but the way the electronic sounds work... it almost more effective. The note's blend together really well. I'm curious if it would be possible to program a looping segment of stairs into a classic Mario game. That'd be cool for a rom-hack...
Dave, what do you mean "Powerful Mario" music? What's the song/game? There are a lot of songs that could be considered 'powerful mario music.' Haha.
I try to get the sounds as close to the originals as possible, while still keeping it as if it were programmed in a game back in the day. There are a lot of compositions and techniques used in a lot of NSFs that never sound like they could be made in the 80s.
Yeah, Dragon Roost will be a classic - I am sure 10 years from now it will be remembered as one of the 'classic' Zelda songs that will bring on the nostalgia when people hear it.
Done. I didn't even notice this was in the wrong place. Thanks for pointing it out

I don't know your definition of "classic", but Merriam-Webster's is pretty close to mine:
1 a: serving as a standard of excellence : of recognized value <classic literary works> b: traditional, enduring <classic designs>
...
3 a: historically memorable <a classic battle>
...
How would you distinguish between "a classic" and "only considered a classic" anyway? If people consider something to be "a classic", who are you to say they're wrong?
I suppose I could go with Dave's version and rephrase myself and say "Dragon Roost Island is one of the most memorable themes of video game music", but that's how most people use "a classic" afaik.
For the record, I haven't played brawl myself, nor did I know that song was in there.
Nice attempt! I'm glad you also decided to include the counter melody, since to me that's one of the definitive things about the SM64 version of the track. Here's my version (uses one MMC5 channel.)
That is not possible. You can only play the nsf files using special players or plugins, but you cannot edit them or even simply view patterns, notes and other data.
