I'd like to go ahead and try to tune the Sunsoft samples a bit better, and to do that I need to record them as they're being played...now is it a lossless process to record DPCM samples, tinker them, then save as a wav file and convert back to DPCM again?
No, I was talking about how the playback rates of the DPCM channel are out of tune. Some of them more than others, but mostly the higher pitches suffer. You can check [url=http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/APU_DMC#Pitch_table]THIS table for it.
What I'd like to attempt is reducing the deviation by changing the pitch of the 5 original samples in such a way that I can get the repitched samples to sound more in tune.
It's a lossless process in the sense that the quality won't suffer to any noticeable degree, but I'd recommend exporting the WAV from VirtuaNSF or FamiTracker so as not to add soundcard noise from recording.
