Well, hi there...
Just recently discovered the forums (aka. right now) and wanted to show you a little track I made.
While I am a GREAT PLAYER at this game (I don't get past the first boss, Bugle Boy/Billy the Bin), I heard the Soundtrack and -to be honest- I loved it from the first moment I heard it.
Then, I discovered, that Earthworm Jim was once pirated and released-... For the NES.
So I wondered: "How does this sound?" and, to my great displeasure, it sounded horrible. Now, I'm standin' here, and I present to you,
what could've been in EWJ, if it was released on the NES.

(The .FTM is attached.)
Oh, and this is the second work I've made with FamiTracker.
There are 2 other EWJ-vids on my channel, but they are both EWJ2 and really not that good.
It's common practice here if you want criticism and feedback to attach the ftm file so people can look at how you made it, and give you more in depth criticism.
(They can be surly buggers otherwise)

Did somebody say surly bugger?!? I'm here! :D
From what I can tell just from listening to it without looking at the track, it sounds pretty good to me. I haven't played Earthworm Jim in a long time, but I like the sound of what you did here.
Looking at the .ftm file, I still have to say...I think it's pretty good. Keep it up! Seriously.

This remake has a very Rare/Battletoads aesthetic to it - lots of sharp short simple sounds. If that's what you're going for, it's good (And I enjoyed it The noise channel in particular is sweet). If you'd like to create interesting instrumentation but don't know how, I recommend you watch explod2a03's excellent NES sounds video series, starting here:

I would like to add the following (it may not be very helpful, but still):
You can also learn a thing or two from what other people have done (that's how I learned the most things), especially if you want to create good instruments. If you want to use their instruments, just remember to credit them. It's also important to experiment while creating instruments, because you might learn how things work and also improve your instruments (and it's also quite fun when you get used to it).
And before you create something with a different sound chip, you should learn the basics first and create songs with 2a03.
This is just what I have to say, I still think that I'm a beginner, so my advice may not be good at all, but what do I know...
(and sorry about my language if you don't understand what I'm writing :P)
Btw, I've never played Earthworm Jim and never heard of the soundtrack, but I kinda like the song there, it sounds really good (I have no idea if it's accurate though).

Thanks for the reviews to all of you.^^
@Patashu: Hm, it's good, but as it seems there isn't an episode about instruments only...

Pretty great for a start, I like the simplicity of the sharp basic sounds, it gives the song a nice first-generation NES game music feel to it.
And yeah about the DPCM and sound effects thing...in most NES games, the sound driver is programmed in such a way, that all channels are used in music, and when a sound effect needs to be played, the channel(s) that make(s) the sound simply stop caring about their role in the music, and make the sound, then return back to playing the song with the rest of the channels again.
A nice example is when in megaman games, you reach the boss or use an E-tank and you hear the energy bar fill up. In the meantime, only the noise and triangle are playing the music since the two pulse channels are busy making the energy bar sound.

Well, for individual instruments you have to think about:
-Volume. Think in terms of ADSR: [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSR_envelope]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSR_envelope and also think about tremolo (bouncing the volume up and down), echoes (on the same channel or on a different channel) and whether you want it to have a long tail (never quite end) or a short tail (end abruptly).
-Pitch. For the most part this means 'do I want vibrato, if so how much?' but it also has consideration when making triangle wave bass kicks and 50% pulse bass kicks (Try setting pitch to | 40 and pressing it on different pitches, for example)
-Arpeggios. You can use this to add flavour (-5 0 7 12 0, 0 12 24 0, 0 12 0, 0 19 0, -12 12 7 0, 0 12 0 19 0, ...) or colour (tim follin style sweeping arpeggios such as | 0 0 4 4 7 7 12 12 19 19 24 24, detuning like -1 0 1 0, 0 5 0, ...). You can also use this to spice up noise drums - try a arpeggio like 0 5 8. At some pitches it'll sound like a snare 'pop', at others like thuds and other weird things. How about 0 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5? 0 5 5 1 7 7 2 9 9? etc
-Duty cycle. For 2A03 pulses, 2 0 makes a distinctive 'guitar' sound - and all of the combinations of two or three duty cycles have different neat sounds, so try and exploit them all! Also, you can have duty cycles that take a lot longer to resolve, such as 0 0 0 1 1 1 2 2 2, | 0 0 1 1 2 2, 0 1 2 0 1 2, 0 1 2 0 0 1 1 2 2 1 1 0 0 1 1 1 1 2 2 1 1 2 2 2 2 1 2... For the noise channel, 0 is normal noise and 1 is 'buzzing' much lower period noise. Using the buzzes for single frames or whole notes can give you ride cymbal hits, static, crackliness, glitch inspired stuff...
