Hello, when using FamiTracker under Vista I am getting a slight delay before my keyboard presses register and actually play the notes. Is this a known problem? All was fine on XP.

Thanks for any help,

Jason.

In the "sound" tab under configuration in famitracker, you can set the buffer length. Try lowering it to something like 20 and see if you're still getting a noticeable delay. If the buffer is set too low your computer won't be able to calculate the sound before it's to be played and you will get distorted sound. If this happens, raise the buffer again.

Hello, I have the buffer set to 24, anything lower results in no sound at all. There is still a difference though between Vista and XP despite my Vista computer being much higher spec.

I have seen that other audio apps have problems with sound delays on Vista and that using OpenAL has improved things a lot (Audacity for instance). Maybe an option to select an audio driver could be added to a future version? I can thoroughly recommend OpenAL myself as many of my sound problems with other programs have disappeared on Vista systems when using it.

How do you use OpenAL in other programs? Is that a separate driver you can download and install?

I'm using Vista too and I'm having about 150ms delays with a buffer of 23ms, when playing on the computer keyboard. It doesn't bother me much though, I don't play this live very often. How long is your delay?

The delay I get is probably a little more than that. Nothing major just something that I hope gets a fix in the future as I know that it didn`t happen on XP so it is definitely a Vista issue.

To use OpenAL the program needs support built in I think but yes, it is a driver that you install. I think that it is open source but I am not 100% on this. May be worth looking into.

I know you can select a sound driver in Famitracker, but I don't know if OpenAL would show up in that list if I installed it... I have two soundcards in my computer, plus a HDMI port on my graphics card, and they all show up as possible drivers in Famitracker's device list. These are really just output ports though, maybe not drivers per se.

You're probably right though, I don't remember there being a delay at all in XP.

I have OpenAL installed on my computer and it doesn`t show up in the list either. Obviously there is something else that needs to be done to enable the program to use it.

150ms? That sounds totally unacceptable. Do you have that in other programs also? I'm using XP here so I'm not able to figure out what's wrong but I can check if it's worth to add OpenAL. ASIO is also an option, but I know nothing about it and dunno if it's worth the trouble using it.

ASIO does sort out exaclty the same problems when running FL Studio on my Vista system so it may be worth the look. But yes, 150ms is quite annoying and seems to happen on lots of Vista systems that I have tried so it is probably worth looking into at some point.

jsr, could you try to get a hold of (borrow one when visiting a friend or something) a vista computer and see if you're getting the same issue?

If you do a search for sound delay problems in Vista you will see lots of threads about similar issues.
