I have uploaded a beta of the new version . (A change log is included.) I think it's ready to release, but would like to know that I haven't missed any obvious bugs.
It's now possible to configure the note-off key, so I removed the alternative key mappings of it. I'm also working on note-release but it's not complete so it's currently disabled.
I`m a new user and I just wanted to say that this latest beta looks and works great! One small request, could you please allow an option to disable the auto backup of files?
It's great, but is those color changes in pattern header and line numbers columns will be in release version as well? Didn't like that, it forces to use dark-on-light color schemes because too much contrast otherwise.
Btw, it's not important, but FT can drop if some unusual font selected.
Some really nice new features in this version, jsr! Good job!
I do have some questions however - "It's now possible to configure the note-off key, so I removed the alternative key mappings of it." How and where do you configure the note-off key? I don't see it in the list in the shortcuts tab in the configuration window, nor repeat or clear field.
What do the clear field and repeat buttons do anyway?
There's also been a few changes to the ui - everything seems to be a lot more condensed so that you can squeeze in more channels on the screen at the same time. Nice! And I like how the instrument column entries turn red if the instrument doesn't exist.
I agree with Shiru, the new line numbers and channel headers are a little difficult to see compared to the rest of the frame editor. Have these been changed to improve performance or just to save window space?
I also miss how the whole frame editor turned red in edit mode in the previous versions. It looks sleeker and more professional now, but...
I've noticed the scroll wheel jumps 4 rows in the frame editor regardless of the row highlight. It would be cool if the scroll wheel jump length could be set to either of the highlights - maybe a checkbox or a radio button next to each? I can put this in the request thread instead if you want.
Hrm — I simultaneously love and dislike the new FT beta, for a couple of reasons.
Love:
· The new UI, at least as far as how condensed it is. At the low resolution I'm using right now (1024×768) I can now see all of the VRC6 channels on the screen at once without having to scroll.
· The nifty addition to the row highlighting — though it's semi-broken; the rows don't update until you click back into the pattern editor. (also, any chance you allow people to change the color of the secondary rows? That would be great. :D)
· The addition of MMC5! YES! — now make it so that I can use VRC6 and MMC5 at the same time. :D
Don't love:
· The fact that FamiTracker now freezes (i.e. 'Follow Mode' turns off) when selecting a section during playback of a song. After you select something, the song keeps playing, but the window freezes on whatever you've selected. I find this annoying because I frequently use the old behavior to change the octaves of various patterns really fast by just selecting the channel I want to change, hitting 'Play', and using the 'Octave Down'/'Octave Up' shortcut key while the song plays.
· Also: hitting 'Esc' doesn't clear the selection like it used to; is there a new hotkey for that? o.O?
· That the new UI (while nicely condensed) is the same solid colors as the Windows GUI — before, it went better with the default light-on-dark color scheme; this one almost requires a dark-on-light color set in order to see things better.
· That the UI no longer changes color to red/blue, depending whether you're in Edit Mode or Normal Mode. When the whole GUI changed color, it was obvious whether you were in Edit Mode or Normal Mode; the single row turning red/blue is a little more difficult to notice.
· (minor) The fact that FamiTracker STILL starts out in 'Restored' mode instead of Maximized! \o.o/
Anyway — that's all for my complaints/compliments. I think for now, I'll just stick with 0.2.9 and keep waiting for the next full release.
Still, I'm glad that it's coming along! :D Thank you for the beta release, jsr!
I love the new Beta, thankyou Jsr!
My favourite new feature is being able to transpose and change other values using the mouse wheel, its really sped up the composition process for me
Also as Kizul has mentioned the new UI, It is fantastic to be able to see all of the channels including VRC6 at once, yes!
Wonderful work and many thanks x
I suspected that the GUI changes would cause some reactions. But the old design didn't work well with light colors (and I wasn't really satisfied with it at all) so I replaced it with a bit more neutral design. However if you think the contrast is a problem (I don't but probably got used to it) then I'm gonna look over it again.
Dafydd: The key config is in general settings. Clear field is used to remove only the selected part of the cursor in a channel instead of all fields (as with delete-key), it's necessary when the option to make delete-key pull up rows are used. Repeat key inserts the last inserted value again, as in impulse tracker. And mouse wheel is using the page jump setting.
Kizul: The behavior when playing with selection is copied from modplug tracker, but it's no problem to change it back. Selection is also supposed to be more like in other windows programs, so clear it by moving the cursor. (But I can reinsert esc-key to remove it.)
In the instrument list pattern, shouldn't it have it's own icon instead of the 2A03/2A07 icon, or does it share the same data as the original 2a03?
Now that the extension is added, shouldn't there be a feature where you can add both VRC6 and MMC5 when you're going to make NES songs? Right now, I can only add VRC6 or MMC5.

Cool, thanks for getting this all sorted out.
I still think it'd be useful if the scroll wheel could be set to a custom jump length, or be linked to the highlight or step lenght, and not be bound to powers of 2...
Kunighetz: there's not much point in giving MMC5 channels their own logo since they have the exact same capabilities and sounds as the original square channels. It would almost make more sense to make a new icon for triangle channel instruments. I think the only reason the vcr6 instruments were given their own icon is that you can't use a vcr6 instrument on the normal channels since they have so many duty cycles and it would be hard to solve the problem of what should happen on the regular square if you try to play, say, duty cycle 5 on that... it's much better to keep them apart so you don't confuse them - with MMC5 it makes no difference.
there's not much point in giving MMC5 channels their own logo since they have the exact same capabilities and sounds as the original square channels.
What about the third channel?
i don't see why auto backup can't have an on/off option. that way everyone's happy.
also I think all channels/chips should have their own logos. the counterargument as i see it is that not everyone sees expansion chips as simply extra polyphony, and using the same logos for similar channels on different chips would probably allude to that.
row highlighting is awesome, though a little faint/hard to see. perhaps it's my monitor though. glad to see this!
not a huge fan of the newer slimline/grey look, though it's surely just a case of getting used to it after using the old, larger interface.
also, what about checkboxes rather than a list for expansion chips? sorry if i already mentioned this.
ALSO ALSO. make the sexy blue oscilloscope the default one!
EDIT: just tried exporting my MMC5 sand ocean cover with the new beta and it works properly now gr8
Would it be possible to let us choose between the old large interface and the new slim one? I have a widescreen monitor and it looks kind of goofy now.
Also I much prefer the older dark interface to the new gray one.
the Interpolate option is awesome!
Another bug that still exists is if you open a 2A03 instrument properties window and then click over to select a VRC6 instrument, the parameters window is blank.
