I think it's safer that way too. jsr mentioned it as a "feature" that was the same in other trackers. But I can't remember that it is that way in other ones...
Perhaps copy and paste, but not using delete button ot insert and stuff, are allowed wihtout being in edit mode in other trackers.
Initially all edit actions was disabled when not in edit mode, but I received complaints back then so I changed it. (I guess there is no common behavior, right?).
I'm only disabling edit when I'm trying out new notes and then leave it enabled all the time and that works fine for me.
I guess you're right, the only thing that I've done by accident is marking a part of the song and then deleting it (with intension just to delete a single note). But thank god (jsr), there is a CTRL-Z function!
I was using this worthless and really expensive molecule modelling program in school and it didn't have an undo function... everything took at least 3 times as long as it should have.
jsr - couldn't there be an option that lets you choose whether delete should still work in normal mode?
Jam mode is great, as I can test out a lead pattern while playing a bassline without messing up my work. I enjoy this feature, and i think it is in like 100% of all trackers (I would think at least) any how. It is a very useful thing, and I still find it funny when people ask "How do i enter notes?" Because i remember spending a day to figure out how the little red record button was to go to edit mode. I had always thought instead of a red circle there might be a *EDIT* button, but maybe that would still confuse people. So in conclusion the Jam mode is a needed Feature.
Nobody says the Edit mode is useless, I just wonder why normal mode disable only notes, though logically it must disable any input.
Btw, I think, the Edit mode must be default mode (active after tracker start), because there is no point to have normal mode while no instruments available to jam with.
