This is my first attempt at using the VRC7 expansion. Although there's obviously a lot I still don't understand about FM channels (such as how they behave with volume control), I'm pretty pleased with it. Apart from the ending. Which is diabolical.
Feel free to criticise. Constructive would be better but abuse is accepted. Praise too, if the mood takes you.
Edit : I just listened to the NSF, it sounds very different! Too harsh in some places, but the volume control works better than in Famitracker...
Sorry man, I just don't feel qualified to make any kind of opinionated statement on this track - reggae is not my thing. That probably goes for a lot of folks here though... you've combined a niche interest with another niche interest.
My ears tell me this is not a bad effort though; it sounds like I would expect a reggae track to sound... volume is good... the whistley lead is pretty neat...
The problem I have with reggae is the same problem I have with country music - there are too many musical restrictions to allow for any real freedom of expression without words....
...then again, you could say the same thing about blues, I guess.
It's not 'worse than terrible'... it's not even terrible, or bad for that matter. Heck, you did way better with VRC7 than any of my attempts.
It's cool that you like reggae, but maybe you should take the elements you like most about it and develop your own style instead of trying to conform to something so limiting.
Er... that's kind of an arbitrary statement.... just putting in my two-cents. No offense intended.

Oh, no offense taken at all! I appreciate and respect your opinion, and in some ways doing chip-reggae (especially using a 'genuine' chip) is limiting - I mean for a start your 'skank' or offbeat can take up 2 or 3 or 4 channels alone, depending on what you want to do with it. But then so is using Famitracker in the first place, and I'm happy with trying to create something using the limitations.
I think more to the point is like you said, you're not into reggae so you don't get it. I've actually spent the last couple of tunes trying to conform to chip music and famitracker forum standards. Although I like that work I don't think it turned out as good as my reggae stuff.
I do think the good think about my stuff is that it is quite unique - it's not like your average reggae-chip-tune (and believe me, there's a lot out there).
Here's a little review of my work (as Archie Wah Wah): http://digidupe.tumblr.com/page/7
And here's my soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/archie-wah-wah
I have a steady but appreciable following - people who are into both chip and reggae. I recognise I'm doing something a bit different to most people in here, but, hey, such is my life!
Is there any way you guys could comment on it as a chiptune rather than a reggae tune? I mean I hear funk, jazz, pop, metal and all sorts of genres in here as it is...
Yeah I think it's safe to assume there's a lot more to it than I know. That's usually the case when someone says something like "they all sound the same!" You'll have to excuse my ignorance. :P
Anyway, it sounds like VRC7 is not only an appropriate choice for you given the six extra channels, but accommodating as well since you get a lot of strange metallic sounds out of it - Like I said, I'm horribly inept at even the simplest frequency-modulated synth, so anyone that can use it worth a damn at all always impresses me :D
Just reiterating - volume control sounds good (I'd recommend turning all your VRC7 channels down before exporting to NSF, though) and I like your instruments (specifically that Flappy Flute :D), then again you always do seem to have some pretty interesting/unique instruments in your stuff (that's a compliment).
Heck, I'm just happy to see an original up here every once-in-a-while; these kids seem to be more into covers these days, for some reason.
I'd say just keep on truckin' and do what you love to do. Try not to be discouraged if people here don't appreciate you.

Well, i must say this song is quite good. In fact, it is one of the best i have heard using the VRC7 expansion. I tried to find some mistake in the FM channels but i failed to do so. For your first attempt, and the song being original, i have to say you have talent. However, i listened to the ftm and it has some volume problems, but nothing big. I think you have done a fairly good work on this song.

How many have you heard? Not many people have released stuff that uses the VRC7. :p
Anyway yeah this is pretty good. I thought the use of FM was pretty creative.

I record (some) NSFs on hardware. Feel free to request a hardware render.
They're just a few. Some doodles, some original songs(like this one), stuff on youtube, Lagrange point's soundtrack, and things like that. I have tried using that expansion, maybe just to know what it can do, but I think this song might inspire me to try doing something using VRC7. It might be very limited, but if I learn more about how it works, I'm sure I could do something with it.
And I recommend aaaaaaaaaalll of this.
Basically that's an archive I just made with all the VRC7-only NSFs I could find that either wowed me or have something in them that makes them worth listening to. Enjoy!
(yeah I threw my own stuff in there, whatcha gonna do about it)

Thanks! I thought I'd posted it here - it's actually an OHC I did a couple months ago.
