A thing I have trouble with in Famitracker is making drum crashes and stand-out rolls within the framework of my music. I usually use these to lead into new sections of a piece. As the DPCM can only handle short samples (or so I'm aware) and as, of course, all channels are monophonic (including noise) - thereby allowing you only the space until the next beat comes in - this is a difficult technique to master. Does anyone have any good tips or tricks for rolls/pick ups/lead ins in famitracker?
Unless the crash comes at the end of a piece or section, I usually let it play for a beat if the next beat is a snare, or a beat and a half if the next beat is a hi-hat.
I don't have experience with rolls though..

One technique I have is if I have a crash and a snare going at the same time, I play the snare then as soon as the 'snare-y' part is done (the lifting out of pitch 1 into the higher pitched stuff) I can swap back to playing the part of the crash that would be playing. Similarly, you can multiplex any channel to play whatever would be most prominent, then drop back to the more background sound immediately afterwards. (For example, I have an instrument that plays a triangle bass kick then resumes a solid pitch, using a Fixed mode arp)
Also, since DPCM can go up to 256kb of storage, you can use pretty long samples if you're prepared

Oh wow, Gyms, you've done some awesome stuff to fix the problem right there. My problems are based around volume and duration of beats - by sneaking in the hat and reintroducing the crash bleed sound you've certainly circumnavigated the problem of duration. The volume problem is how to get those loud sounding crashes without making the rest of your drum beat weak throughout the tune, although as long as the crash sounds nice I guess it can be gentle.
Anyway, here's what I was working with when I posted this thread. The part I'm referring to is at patterns 02 DPCM and noise, into noise pattern 03. It doesn't sound too bad actually because the noise section isn't too tight with hi-hats like it often is in my music, and the DPCM snare is pretty beefy.
EDIT: The tune needs a ghost note at the start to make the pick up work first time out (not that that's relevent to my problem).
