Is there some way I could have done harmonies without an expansion chip?

The same way all NES musicians did them back in the day - pick a channel that's not doing anything important, make it do your harmony until the harmony ends, then put it back on its previous job.

There are also 'tricks' where one channel plays two instruments at once (see the end of Solstice's intro by Tim Follin as an example, one channel is playing a mix of short bleeps and long flutey noises and you can't tell it's just one channel unless you know)

One can always use 900 BPM and manually place an "echo" in the same channel. Castlevania did it all the time.

Yeah, pretty much this. There are certain things you'll pick up by studying others. In this case, just look at a lot of 2A03's. In the square channels, the 2nd pulse can usually stray from whatever arp (or whatever) it's doing do emphasize certain harmonies. Another thing I've picked up is utilizing different instruments even on the same pulse, if a note makes a decresendo or something. Also don't forget that the triangle channel can achieve the same thing!

And yes, if you want to improve your 2A03's study the hell out of Solstice. I learned so much from just the intro.

Awesome, thanks guys. @Denine - No it's not a cover. Just a random doodle I came up with the other night and felt like posting.

You don't need 900 bpm to do that - you just need twice as many rows as the fastest melody you want to have a same channel echo of, then you can use Gxx if you don't want it to take up half of the channel time.

(Shatterhand is another soundtrack full of same channel echos - as well as same channel pauses, which is difficult to pull off in famitracker without 900 BPM or clever trickery)
