I personally use "=" because ModPlug - I honestly feel the default button should be set by the keyboard layout, and then can be changed manually after if need be.
The reason I selected '1' is because it's close to the release key on my layout, but I can see that '~' would make sense on a US layout. Anyway the important thing is that it's accessible by default on most layouts.
