It's set to \ - but note release also starts set to \, and when you hit \ note release is what comes out - which is a beginner trap, as note release does nothing if your instruments have no release envelopes anyway. Note cut should be easier to get to than note release, not the other way around.

Yes, but the default is how any newcomer sees it. And by default, one of the most useful keys (note cut) is hidden from use.

Several keys was assigned to note cut earlier but all these was removed when they key got customizable and the initial key (<) was made default, which I guess is not that common then. I might as well change this default key if users needs to change it anyway.
