I've been playing around with a few ideas lately regarding how to 'humanize' any given tune in FT. These are some early experiments and I'm not sure at this point if what I'm hearing is a biased feel or if there's really an appreciable difference.

If you could spare a moment of your time to take the poll up there that'd be awesome. The focus would be to just not even think about it too much, pick which nsf feels better to you. The differences are very slight so it's okay if you really can't tell a difference.

Thanks!

Tune by Heos.

I record (some) NSFs on hardware. Feel free to [url=http://www.famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=3633]request a hardware render.

Couldn't tell any difference but the vibratos aren't sounding right. I think you must have turned the engine speed up which also speeds up the vibrato rate.

No, it's just a bug in FT 0.4.0 where 4xy and 7xy sound wrong in exported NSFs. :p

Thanks everybody for participating!

What these results suggest is that:

A)This approach has no appreciable difference, and
B)if there is, people prefer the feel of a good ol fashioned nsf without this treatment.

(q is the original, r is my treatment)

Doxic said q feels more "alive" and I can totally feel that too.

The technical difference is that r.nsf is a manual pattern of notes being delayed and detuned in an even and consistent way across sq1,sq2 and tri. I didn't save the ftm, but if you want to see what the patterns are doing, it's easy enough to spot what I did through nsfimport.

My own perception of r is that it has a greater sense of depth and self-containment when compared to q(i'm avoiding using the word 'organic' here). I would agree that q sounds more "alive" like Doxic put it, but it also has a "flatter" tone to it and feels like it's moving in a straight line(in comparison, that is. It sounds just fine as is).

My perception is probably biased tho, I think I really want to hear a desirable difference so my subconscious is doing its thing.

Humanization is a very cool concept if done right, but I think this tends to require "transcription" from a genuine real-time performance rather than subtle randomization. For instance, using a MIDI controller with Renoise, you might record a live performance, then use the resultant note delays and velocities as a reference for what you wanna make in Famitracker. It's something I've thought about alot, but never got around to actually doing.
