This has been discussed earlier but I took a tuning program to tune two octaves of noise notes as best as I could. Of course I had to hex edit to overclock to 16kHz in order to have an ok pitch range.

You know, the 5B can do this exact thing with a lot more accuracy and no overclocking.

But we don't have the 5B yet, now do we?

I can't wait for it, though. I'm fairly sure none of us can actually.

And so I suppose you "draw" the waveform with the volume values?
I've been listening to some AY-3-8910 music lately and the envelope "sawtooth" waveform is curvy, and not a straight line. So I suppose the frequency is not high enough?

I tried this once with a cover, but I never finished it.
The name of the FTM stands for 26000hz.

What I mean is that the 3 square channels of the 5B can do a logical AND with the noise generator. i.e. you can make a square wave on-off noise at whatever pitch you like.

The 5B envelope can do a saw or triangle shape (though it is a curved "logarithmic" shape, since it's supposed to be for volume), and you can get a few badly tuned bass notes out of it.

And Im_a_track_man, clearly the only one of us who couldn't wait was za909, who synthesized a 5B technique by hacking his FTM!

Well at the time I was making this I actually didn't think the 5B envelope could do that because I remembered you saying the 5B is weaker than an actual AY-3-8910 and I was only really concerned about having the noise generator in FT.

The 5B is identical to a YM2149F, which is identical to an AY-3-8910 except the envelope generator is smoother (double resolution).

However, the 5B is a very underclocked version of the chip compared to a ZX or Atari ST, so you don't have as much pitch resolution (mostly relevant to trying to use envelope as bass).

Anyhow, the noise vs. square effect does not involve the envelope generator. It works exactly like the FTM you just made, i.e. you can play noise but gate it on and off with one of the square waves.
