Y'know, it would be cool if someone started a public instrument database that took account of the settings for every instrument in every NES game. That would be a cool project.
...though I'd say some people may consider that "cheating" as far as chiptune composition goes. I just thought it would be neat to have a kind of "reference" for making tunes.
Anyone up for it? Or does it already exist somewhere out there?
You must take in account that unique sound of games made not by certain instruments settings, but by combination of instruments, tricks and composer's technique.
For example, some sounds can be combination of two or more channels working together - for example, triangle+noise drums or 'bold' solo using two same instruments, but with vibrato on one of them. So, instrument settings itself isn't enough to recreate the sound.
If I were to set up some kind of free wiki, would anyone be interested in such an endeavor?
I figure you could lay it out like this:
I. GAME
II. SONG IN GAME (BASIC INFO: TEMPO, ETC)
III. TRACKS IN SONG
A. SQUARE 1 SETTING(S)
1)EFFECTS (HEXADECIMAL)
B. SQUARE 2
1)EFFECTS (HEXADECIMAL)
C. TRIANGLE
1)EFFECTS (HEXADECIMAL)
D. NOISE
E. DPCM
Good idea!
I must agree with Shiru though, the actual insrument settings is not a direct givaway of any specific company sound. A lot of it has to do with how the channels are used in relation to each other, not to mention the composers' musical direction. That being an opinion, not a fact.
But another solution would be to build a collection of hi-fidelity covers, all in ftm, and maybe even catalogue the files by company name.
Then you could go through different games you like, and see how the sound can be reproduced in FT.
What do you guys think?
There can be all sorts of information, sample ftms, ready-made instrument files, etc etc...
I can host a wiki, but I wouldn't know how to administer one. You could also ask Slize106, the admin of this forum, if he'd be interested in helping by hosting a wiki here. The thing would be heavily famitracker related, after all. Why don't you send him a PM?
Alright, so I will start looking through my files, and see what I can come up with.
If we all do this we can then upload them somewhere and compare, eliminate duplicates, and start origanizing the whole thing.
Looking forward to this!

I hope the wiki is up and running sometime in the weekend. I have made a plugin for [url=http://www.mediawiki.org/]mediawiki so that it using the same users as the forum. Just have some more integration work left.
