I decided to abandon the pattern idea because it prompted some people to get a head start and begin working on their entry before the contest had even started.

It's very much against the spirit of the contest to brew your tunes months in advance. Just saying.
Also I wouldn't hold my breath for an N163 compo if I were you; it might not happens until months from now and by then, support for the chip will probably have been improved massively, making your current tunes obsolete anyway.
...when the NEXT stable version comes out, won't there be a newfangled N163 chip with no demo modules to accompany it?
Also, I dislike the idea that someone who can't create a module in 3 weeks is "against the spirit". This isn't realworld pressure where you prove you can meet a project deadline. It's about famitracking awesomeness.
Well, I surely don't see it being "against the spirit", jrlepage. One could just say, "oh I am just covering stuff as I normally do" and just submit that as their entry whenever the following compos come around. Nothing wrong with that really.
My very idea when launching this contest was to make it a series of quick-fire rounds to see what people could come up with in a really really short time, and reward their extraordinary ability to do so by granting them a place in history. I feel preparing your entry way in advance is comparable to cheating in a sense, since it defeats the purpose of making these contests happen on a monthly basis. If it's going to be a constant problem, I guess I'll go the Famicompo way and make this a yearly or half-yearly event instead. Not that I want to, but it really grinds my gears having participants openly admit that they will cheat the system like that.

I consider 3 weeks to be a lot of time, actually. I don't think spending more time than that will matter much for the quality of an entry. The musical skill of the author is much more important. People like coda can make better music in one day than the average famitracker user can make in 6 months.
I have no problem myself with losing to an excellent entry. If the author was spending 6 months on it, so what? He spent more time and effort on his entry than I did, and it wouldn't be unfair to reward him for it.
Also, I highly doubt if the guys who admitted to starting their VRC6/VRC7 entries prematurely will really make it to the top 3.
