Hello, I searched for a thread to help me with the Fxx effect and I couldn't find one.
Um, I can't really figure out how to use it effectively. I see it used in other peoples songs and even there I don't really know what it does or how they got it to work. It just never seems to work properly.
The wiki didn't help me either.
Can someone give a brief explanation of the Fxx effect? I'd be really grateful.
It changes the duty cycle in a 2A03, MMC5 or VRC6 channel, and it changes the wave number in a N163 channel. In 2A03 and MMC5, valid inputs span from 00 to 03. VRC6 spans 00 to 08, and N163 00 to 0F.
Note that if your instrument already has a duty cycle/wave envelope and you're activating that and the Vxx effect on the same row, then the envelope will take precedence.

Uhh, I'm sorry. I posted about the Vxx, but I meant the Fxx. I got it mixed up in my mind I guess.
Fxx changes the speed or the tempo in a module. I think this was changed in 0.3.8 so someone will have to verify for me, but I believe values of below 20 change the speed, whilst values of 20 or more change the tempo.
Often people will leave the tempo at 150 and change the speed instead. This means that one knows exactly how many ticks each row is 'worth', and so one can base the instrument envelopes, Gxx and Sxx effects around this (especially the latter two). Different tempos can be acheived by using alternating Fxx effects, for example:
F06
F05
F06
F05
F06
F05
F06
F05
...
...will give a tempo of around about 170BPM (again, I need verifying).
Have a play. It's quite a useful effect.

Fxx lets you modify it on the fly, and for the reason Pie mentioned, it's a useful technique if you're a meticulous person like me. :p
I like to know exactly where a note with Gxx next to it will land, so knowing how many ticks a row lasts help immensely.
Thanks! I always saw the alternating Fxx effects and didn't understand it, but I see now why it's used.
So people would rather use the Fxx than the speed and tempo changer in the song settings?
I used to just change the bpm, but now I change the speed in such an alternating way, so I can create instruments that use the knowledge of exact lengths to my advantage (like a pre-defined arpeggio or sweep)
