Hello,

I'm trying to write more dance music in famitracker, but I can't find a good way to get a good strong bass beat.

An example of what I want to create is in this song by Random.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK3ncPphEO4

I've tried messing around in VRC7 module and couldn't figure out how to quite get this sound.

Here is a decent Bass drum using the Triangle. It works best played on C3

i gave it a shot

it's hard to get that Random sound exactly, since he uses a gameboy and not NES

edit: emphasized the compression simulation a bit more

if jrlepage has made the wiki page for it, tell him to show the link of it, if he hasn't, tell him to make a wiki page for it

standard routine

that would be an impressive and involved writeup.

getting a thick, punchy, non dpcm kick involves so many things outside of making an instrument for it.

edit: things like A-0(55Hz) being the lowest possible on (most?) everything. A real kick has a fundamental around 50-80Hz and is atonal. To get a that punchy kick tone, you gotta do what you can to simulate the overtones as well as letting the fundamental ring a bit, which will play a lower note, implying a root. To change chords, you'd have to modify the kick with each chord change.

60Hz(engine speed) isn't fast enough to build a convincing atonal kick tone, i don' think. I should try out some faster speed tho.

Well it's not like I have to be the only one to work on the fucking wiki.

The triangle goes down to 27hz; it's an octave lower than the equivalent square. Also, the VRC6 has an extra octave on the bass range than the 2A03 channels so its square channels can go down to 27hz as well (and the saw to 31hz).

I gave it another go at 400Hz. Much more closely resembles a clubby kick/snare. I can really zap down from the highest frequency to get that tone. Also figured the tonal/atonality ring of the kick really depends on the volume envelope more than anything else.

ignore the retarded progression and ugly sidechain effect, was just mucking around there

Yea, forgot about those. The tri kick is great for tunes with an overall softer tuxture I think. I couldn't really get it to cut through on a tune like this one. The saw is definitely something to play with tho, that thing goes low!

Once I get some solid examples going, I'll write one up. Really interested in this for some reason.

Hardware sweeps might work too if you don't want to overclock your NSF..

Wow, I really like both of the kicks you posted. I'm going to fine tune them and tweak a similar one for some of my songs. Your instruments really helped me get an understanding of how to get this sound. You did exactly what I was hoping someone would.

Thanks a plenty!
