This was always bugging me and was... well, only reason I don't use FT for making music and use alternative chiptune makers or VST plugins.
The thing is that most of trackers (Modplug a.k.a OpenMPT, Chibitracker, Sunvox, Jeskola Buzz to name a few) map normal computer keyboard to notes almost perfectly (z stands for C, x for D, etc., basically "whitekeys" on music keyboard and A-" row stands for black keys while qwerty row and numbers stands for higher octave).
For those with MIDI keyboards this is non-issue, but MIDI keyboards are quite expensive and I (and I believe others here too) just can't afford MIDI keyboard.
It already is? If you open on Configuration and make sure the mode is in FastTracker 2 or Impulse Tracker modes, then it works exactly as you said. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the issue is. I don't use a MIDI keyboard with FamiTracker (no sound card/connector of any kind) and this works just fine.

Well, then Modplug model isn't implemented properly as in Modplug it is correct and in FT isn't.
//edit: Switched to Fast Tracker model and this is fixed for me, but Modplug model should be either fixed (download OpenMPT which is Modplug called now - they didn't even change splashscreen and it still says Modplug Tracker, enter some notes, then switch FT into Modplug mode, press same keys, compare results) or just removed.
Modplug mode is working as intended. I think you changed the layout in modplug tracker to FastTracker mode and then won't be identical of course. But then what's the point of using the modplug tracker mode if you don't use that layout in modplug tracker itself?
I recently purchased a MIDI controller from amazon(about $70 including shipping and handling) purely for the sake of convenience. The PC keyboard interface works fine, but it's just easier to get around on an actual keyboard in my opinion. As far as using VST plug-ins, it seems to me that that's sort of defeating the purpose of making chip music. Using a plug-in like magical8bit in FL studio gives you the same sounds, but it doesn't recreate the paramaters of what the actual NES sound chip could handle. You could have a thousand layers, and have them all making different nintendo sounding effects, but at that point you're a nickel shy of being Skrillex imo.
