Demo Compo #1 - Classical Covers!

~UPDATE: APRIL 7, 2012~
The resuls are in!

View Results | Entry Pack

Congratulations to both tadpole and gyms for their brilliant performance! Their covers will, alongside with my own, become official FamiTracker demo tunes! :)

Congratulations to everyone else as well, I think everyone did superbly and I am amazed at the overall quality of the entries. I am very satisfied with the degree of participation; I think this series is off to a great start, and it's all thanks to you guys! I hope this keeps up for future events!

Lastly, if you wish to dispute your own result, you are welcome to tell me in private, and I will recalculate your score to ensure no mistakes were made. :)

~UPDATE: APRIL 6, 2012~
Okay, since all the contestants have voted (with the exceptions of those who said they wouldn't), and there doesn't seem to be any more prospective voters, I'm ending the voting period right now to prepare the results. They will be announced on time (at midnight, in 3 hours as of writing this), and I will also post an entry pack with the tags and filenames intact (with the exception of some truncated filenames and an added entry number in front of them).

Hello and welcome to the first installment of the Demo Compo series! I will be responsible for hosting this series for the next few months, and I hope many fun times will be had during the next few months! The idea is that every contest will last two weeks (exactly fourteen days), and the voting period happens during the first week of the next contest. When the results are announced, the first three entries will be promoted to Official FamiTracker demo module!

Every two weeks we'll alternate between covers and originals, and the sound hardware to use will be different. This week we're doing Covers!

For this first installment, the category is Classical. This means the hardware to use is limited to the 2a03, and the DPCM channel must not be used, with the exception of direct $4011 writes (Zxx effect).

Contestants:[ul][li]danooct1
[li]Raijin
[li]icesoldier
[li]nicetas_c
[li]clerian
[li]kinkinkijkin
[li]gyms
[li]BattleBeard
[li]Bari10
[li]za909
[li]Demick12
[li]psn
[li]tadpole
[li]SriK
[li]Mex
[li]DalekSam
[li]and yours truly. :)[/ul]

Note that anyone can enter even if your name isn't on the list, this is just here for convenience's sake so you have a general idea who you're up against!

Rules and guidelines (as I come up with them):

-All entries must be in FamiTracker Module (FTM) format only. You may provide an NSF alongside your FTM for exhibition purposes when the voting phase is over, but judging will be done using the FTM source file.
-Submissions are limited to only ONE FTM file per entrant. Subsequent entries will be disregarded.
-Each FTM may contain up to three (3) subsongs, but they have to be related to one another. For example, covering a level theme from Donkey Kong Country 2, and including Diddy and Dixie's respective "level complete" themes is okay. Covering one pop song, one videogame tune and one demoscene module is NOT okay. I reserve the right to refuse any entry I find to be violating this rule. If unsure, ask questions before submitting.
-Entries must be compatible with the latest stable release (version 0.3.7), which will be used for judging entries.
-Usage of the DPCM channel is strictly forbidden, except for direct $4011 writes (Zxx effect).
-Usage of any expansion chip is strictly forbidden.
-Original songs are strictly forbidden.
-Super-accurate covers of NES/Famicom soundtracks are not accepted, because those are already being collected here. Covers from videogames on other systems, or remixes of existing NES soundtracks, are okay. Again, I reserve the right to refuse any entry that I judge to be in violation of this.
-NSFs produced using other programs and imported into FamiTracker are not accepted. Again, I reserve the right to refuse entries I suspect of being the product of the NSF Importer.
-Similarly, MIDI->NSF conversions are not accepted.
-Anonymity is strongly encouraged to make voting as fair as possible. In keeping with this guideline, submitting modules written prior to the competition is strongly discouraged unless they were kept absolutely private up until this point.

Submitting & voting:

-On March 23, I will start collecting entries. Submission period ends March 31, 12:00 midnight, Eastern time. When the next contest starts on April 1st, the voting period for the current contest will begin.
-Entries must be submitted to me anonymously. Forum PMs are preferred, but if you know of another way of joining me privately, that's fine too.
-Entries will be renamed, and author/copyright info will be removed from them. When the voting period ends, the full pack will be redistributed with that info left intact (so don't remove it before submitting).
-Voting is also done anonymously, and will be done as follows:
[ul][li]There will be two categories, Musicality and Technique.
[li]Voters will mark each entry out of 10 for each category.
[li]I will add up the two scores, and make an average of each entry's combined scores.[/ul]
-In order for first place, second place and third place modules to be made official demo modules, they must receive a combined average score of at least 17, 16 and 15 respectively. This is to avoid the awkward situation where no entry is truly deserving of being a demo, but ends up in one of those positions due to lack of participation.
-For those concerned with transparency and fairness, I will participate, but will not vote.

Let me know if you have any concerns regarding the organisation of the contest, the voting system or anything else. Otherwise, good luck to all, and see you in a week for the submission period! :D

Are engine speeds other than 60 Hz allowed?

You mean classical as in 2A03 only, right? Not as in Mozart, Beethoven, etc.?

Yes, that is what 'classical' means in NSF parlance. I've always found that strange since it introduces confusion as you probably noticed. But yes, 'classical' = 2a03 without DPCM (2a03 with DPCM will be a separate contest category).

I forgot to mention, we'll be using the stable version (0.3.7) for listening and judging, so make sure you don't use features unique to the beta (0.3.8), such as fixed arps!

As long as 0.3.8 stable is out before we have reached the N163 part, this isn't much of an issue, right?

It will become an issue if you use fixed arps or DPCM bankswitching (in future compos) before 0.3.8 gets a stable release, though. I'll make sure N163 compos happen late enough that 0.3.8 will have been released by then; otherwise, we'll have to use the beta for that one. Same thing for 5B compos.

I've been away in Finland, Estonia, and Latvia for a while, but I still want to participate. When exactly is the deadline?

OK! If you're done with your entry, you may now submit it via PM! I've already received a few, and I'll update the list in the first post as I get them. :)

May I resubmit my submission? There were two minor issues that I found and fixed. I completely understand if resubmission is not allowed, and will be more careful in the future.
