This is a great idea, can't wait to see what'll come out of it. Is this just going to be a free-for-all, exhibition kind of thing or will there be competition involved? Two contests going on at once within the same community might be difficult to orchestrate, but let me know what you think.
i think it'd make things easier to let people decide which expansion gets the job done. also lets people stay within their comfort zones if they prefer to work with certain expansions over others. the idea is just to let the creative juices flow, uninhibited.
personally, i'll probably be working with n163 for the polyphonic freedom.
It'd be nice if this contest has no expansion restrictions, indeed, since the other one will be having it. That way, people without experience with a certain expansion (or that simply doesn't like it) can pass on that one and instead participate on this one.
I think no expansion restrictions, just the theme. It's a different kind of restriction, and the idea here is to write something.
As I said, I'm thinking it'd be good to base the style on Woot Shirt a little. They just have the theme and rules based on the theme, like no Star Wars references (and general ones that keep repeating, like no text), then have submissions open and accountable. The voting is public and the top few spots are obscured until the results are announced. They close entries for one theme and immediately announce and open up the next, so it really rewards the ones who can put up quality fast. Maybe we can announce themes a bit in advance, like an additional voting cycle ahead, so people have more time to polish their things?
This also hinges on the fact that we need a list of themes to do for a contest. It may help to get a list going, then hide it (can't be too prepared) and start the series. This also means that someone needs to be honest enough to hold onto the list and not abuse the privilege to write a massive opus before people have the opportunity to see the theme.

Well I'll have a go at hosting all this business. People can feel free to PM me as many different themes as they want and I'll just end up drawing them out of a hat as we go along.
I guess we can start in a couple days after I've got a few theme submissions.
Also, to address a good question of TechEmporium's from the parent thread:
As for the resulting NSF/FTM files, will they be hosted as attachments (or one big archive attachment) here, or stored externally & have their download links posted?
I'm thinking in order to maintain a clean and clutterfree thread, all entries could be sent to me via PM. Then I can pack them all into one .zip file and share the resulting .zip vote pack links via public dropbox folder, which will be updated and shared on the main bulletin post.
To be honest I'm kind of worried that this will compete for artists' attention with the bi-weekly demo compo, though I do think it is a good idea. I think as long as your thing's deadline doesn't fall too close to mine's, we should be fine.
yea, i was thinking about that. i think the voting aspect will require too much attention to maintain, on the participant's part, and would definitely distract from the bi weekly competition.
i think the main focus here is a kind of organized training ground to sharpen your composition skills, so perhaps it should just stay an exhibition type of thing(?)

Yeah, maybe that would be a good idea. For now, it would probably be best to have open submission and no voting, so people can just make things, post them, and move on.
