I checked ReWire and indeed it seems more suitable, but it appears that the API is not open (even though it's free of cost), and licenses are only handed out to registered audio companies, so adding support for it is probably impossible for small projects like these.
Still, I wouldn't touch something like that until the tracker itself is near done anyway.
