Okay! So starting March 16, 2012, there will be a new series of contests hosted on this forum by yours truly! It won't be as important in magnitude as Famicompo or Winterchip, but it'll be quite a bit of fun I'm sure!

The way this is going to work is as follows: each contest will last a total of 15 days, during which time you will be able to work on your entry. After those 15 days are over, the next one starts immediately, and the voting period for the previous one starts. The results of the first one will be posted as the third contest starts, and so on. Every two weeks, the entries will alternate between covers and originals.

Here is the schedule for the upcoming months. I have left the last day of every 31-day month out so that every contest lasts an equal amount of days.
EDIT: Alternate schedule with the sound chips shuffled instead of changing every 4 weeks. Let me know which version you prefer.
UPDATE: The alternate schedule is the one I'm going to use.

Entries will be submitted anonymously in FTM format via private messaging, and voting will be done directly to me via PM as well. Scores will be given out of 10, and I will make averages and post the final scores at the beginning of the next competition.

Here's the interesting part: Each contest's winning entry will become a demo tune that will come bundled with FamiTracker! It's only slightly better than just bragging rights, but still! Hopefully this will encourage participants to try as hard as possible.

Oh, and anyone who submits Doggtales v2.0 will be DQ'd from the entire series of contest.

If there's anything I forgot or you have any questions, post away!

I hope not, it seems fair to expect everyone to start fresh on something at the start.

@jrlepage, are we going to have themes or restrictions? VRC6, dpcm-less 2a03, certain effects being restricted, etc?

Do the .ftm's have to be NSF compatible? E.g., the FM use of FDS doesn't quite export the same last I checked before the current beta.

Hey yea, that's a good question. It'd make sense to me to submit .ftm's since the focus is on representing the capabilities of the tracker. Plus I'd love to be able to vote entries based on how impressive their tracking techniques are, on top of the composition of course.

Yeah, since the contest is anonymous up until the results are posted, and also because it's just more fair that way, I highly encourage everyone to submit new material.

We'll be alternating between covers and originals every two weeks, and well switch to a different chip every month. I just thought we could do a month of wildcard chip (and leave the choice of expansion usage up to the composers), but I'm not sure yet.

The contest won't involve NSFs at all, so as long as it sounds fine in whatever version of FamiTracker is the current one at the time of the contest, then it's all right.

Shh! Don't give them ideas! :p

I think I might switch some chips around in the schedule, instead of doing one month = one chip. I've been thinking about it I figure it would suck to have to wait 4 months if your chip of preference is the VRC6. Perhaps shuffling them instead might be a better idea.

EDIT: New alternate schedule posted. Let me know what you guys think.

I'm guessing in the alternate schedule, 2C33 == FDS? I kind of prefer the original schedule, so we can have long-term themes, and it can force people to experiment with chips.

Also, this sounds cool. Having songs bundled with the tracker is a good way to introduce people to the program. And what way to choose songs could be better than a contest?
