Version 0.3.8 beta is now available here: http://famitracker.com/files/beta.rar
This version has the Namco sound expansion enabled, please read the included readme file for instructions on how to use it! Additional details about that sound chip can be found here: http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/Namco_163_audio.
The readme file also contains a list of changes in this version, please report any bugs in this thread so I can fix them before the final release. Also try to find and attach the generated dump file if the program crashes, as it will help me debug the problem. Thanks.
I've done some housekeeping in the Wiki over the past few days. You can read about the N163 here (most of this text is taken from jsr's readme file, but adapted for the Wiki article format), and learn how to make instruments here.
If you have any questions that haven't been answered by either of those, ask here, and the answer will be posted here.
Happy messing around!
EDIT: Another known bug - all expansion waveforms are inverted in the oscilloscope.
Were there any changes between the private beta and this one?
Regardless, here's some bugs a few of us found using the private beta:
<?!> MiniDumps are created every time I (?!) exit FT.
<?!> graphics bug.png
<?!> scroll wheel doesn't work for the song list (intentional?)
<?!> deleting a note doesn't delete the instrument number (intentional?)
<?!> When you input 2A03 instruments when using the N106 chip, the note won't demo itself until after the song has been played.
<?!> FDS frequency modulation is bugged. Compare ft038b fds bug.ftm in version 0.3.7 and 0.3.8b. Try letting the latter play through more than once.
<?!> selecting an entire frame and pressing delete deletes the actual frame, but not the contents of the patterns within the frame. If this isn't a bug, then it's incredibly annoying.
<?!> noisesquare.ftm - sounds like farts in 0.3.7, but it's much slower in 0.3.8b
<NC> trying to load 25 DPCM samples simultaneously and receives an unhandled exception C015000F
<NC> song information doesn't save
<NC> fixed 038b2
<NC> no extra-fine pitch changes; all effects change the 20-bit FR by 0x40's
<NC> frame editor cursor should immediately move to next digit upon input
<NC> N106 pitch changes at high frequencies lose resolution
<jp> creating an instrument whilst playing a module will 'hang' the command until playback is stopped. only then will the instrument be created. EDIT: only happens when the N163 is enabled.
EDITx2: Today is also a year since I registered... JOY!!!

Find a recording of a sound you like, open it in an editor where you can see the waveform, pick a segment of the wave that you want, resample it to an appropriate length (e.g. 32 samples) and convert it to 4-bit values for N163 (or 6-bit for FDS).
Alternatively, synthesize a waveform with a fourier synthesis program.
Or... When you have the waveform opened in an audio editor, run your FamiTracker window transparent & on top of the audio editor. Then, trace out the waveform directly from there.
In Windows XP, you can use this program to make windows transparent:
I've always thought that was a pretty ghetto way to do it... but I guess in the absence of tools or programming ability it's a minimally functional way to get your waveforms.
Since I don't use Windows 7, I don't have any tips on making windows transparent.
It works well in Windows 7.
By the way, will there be new effects in the final release?
Crashes:
[ol][li]---: DPCM editor occasionally crashes for small samples.[/li][/ol]
Bugs:
[ol][li]---: In the instrument editor's sequence editor, the green highlight goes 1 frame faster than it should.[/li]
[li]once_for_your_life.ftm: Weird effect upon using Dxx and Fxx on the same row. More noticeable in older versions.[/li]
[li]demolition_newb3.ftm: NSF exportation creates a new, greasy noise wave that occasionally overwrites the triangle wave.[/li]
[li]---: Frame editor's cursor responds really slowly, and inputting numbers too fast causes the cursor to move out of place.[/li]
[li]gffframe.ftm: Effect Gxx at the end of a pattern eliminates whatever is on the same row in exported NSF's, given xx is greater than the no. of frames elapsed; unless the note is not located on the last row AND the pattern is terminated with an Dxx on the same channel as the Gxx effect.[/li]
[li]149.ftm: BPM at the status bar shows incorrect calculation.[/li]
[li]---: FDS instrument editor does not allow modulation rates higher than 999 where Ixx and Jxx permit values up to 4095.[/li]
[li]C000.ftm: Arpeggio effect 0xy doesn't work for note C-0. (N106 used for demonstration but all channels have this bug)[/li]
[li]baend.ftm: Exported FTM's display strange notes in 2A03 channels.[/li]
[li]---: The cursor moves to the right in a epileptic manner whenever the mouse drags a selection to the extreme right edge.[/li][/ol]
Disturbances:
[ol][li]---: Changing instruments with the instrument editor open sometimes causes it to switch the current envelope to whatever lowermost is enabled.[/li]
[li]VVVVVVV.ftm: Removal of support for DPCM samples with incorrect sizes, even though that's solely because VirtuaNSF supports it.[/li]
[li]parallel.ftm: V01 and V03 do not cancel each other. I shall never forget the days when I could test the equivalence between two patterns using this method in 0.3.7. beta 1.[/li]
[li]^---: Several system fonts fail to show up in configuration, as well as a few others such as Webdings.[/li]
[li]^---: On the toolbar, contents to the right of the Export NSF icon tend to disappear randomly.[/li]
[li]---: The DPCM sample assignment window is often too small in Windows 7 to include all 12 notes of an octave without scrolling.[/li][/ol]
