I don't think it would really open any new doors; it's more for the sake of expedience than anything (and also avoiding a messy palette of 37 instruments for one song), though I don't doubt there are a few clever bastards out there like yourself who could find more creative uses for it. :P

This request made me think of how I used to use Oxx (sample offset) in Impulse Tracker on a long sweep sample to basically have a timbre control for a short-envelope instrument.
I guess Vxx sort of covers that kind of thing in FamiTracker... Or even Yxx if you want to do it with a DPCM sample (especially since === instead of --- will just halt instead of popping to zero now).
Where I'd probably find it most useful is if I wanted to "steal" a channel for a row, I could use this to resume the previous note where it left off.
See, this is the kind of thing that made me post this request. I was pretty hesitant at first, since I really only wanted it for my own personal convenience, but the more I thought about it, the more I was sure it would be useful to others for other reasons.
