A channel effect that sets the starting position of instrument envelopes would be pretty handy, I think.

Handier than just creating a new instrument? :p

I mean unless you're really going for optimal memory usage, maybe thrn yeah - but that's not quite what FamiTracker is about, is it...

Besides, what would the effect add an offset to? Volume? Arp? Pitch? Duty? Sounds to me like it would be more complicated than it's worth really...

The effect would add an offset to all of them. It would be a lot like Yxx for DPCM.

I probably wouldn't ever need it, but I can see how someone would use it.

This is the best example I can give where it would make life about 1,000 times easier, not to mention less prone to mistakes.

It doesn't look like much as it is, but start adding different kinds of cymbals and more complicated ideas and it can get pretty sticky. :\

But yeah, like rainwarrior said, all envelopes would be affected.

I can see this effect being used for retrigger envelopes like this
| 12 9 7 5 4 5 7 9
| 5 4 5 7 9 12 9 7
in other words it makes phasing possible
it makes phasing possible
I don't think it would really open any new doors; it's more for the sake of expedience than anything (and also avoiding a messy palette of 37 instruments for one song), though I don't doubt there are a few clever bastards out there like yourself who could find more creative uses for it. :P

This request made me think of how I used to use Oxx (sample offset) in Impulse Tracker on a long sweep sample to basically have a timbre control for a short-envelope instrument.

I guess Vxx sort of covers that kind of thing in FamiTracker... Or even Yxx if you want to do it with a DPCM sample (especially since === instead of --- will just halt instead of popping to zero now).

Where I'd probably find it most useful is if I wanted to "steal" a channel for a row, I could use this to resume the previous note where it left off.

See, this is the kind of thing that made me post this request. I was pretty hesitant at first, since I really only wanted it for my own personal convenience, but the more I thought about it, the more I was sure it would be useful to others for other reasons.

At the very least, thanks for confirming that thought, both of you.
