Hello!

First I want to say I'm a huge fan of the NES sound and while there are a lot of tools out there(like the Famitracker) to make the music, there's pretty much not one working live synth out there. What I want to do is to play live using my PC/Laptop keyboard with the Z row as the white keys and the A row as the black and so on... I hope you understand what I'm talking about. The Famitracker sounds awesome and would be perfect for this, but it has this delay/latency that makes in pretty much impossible to play live. The only live synth that I found that works immediately is LordFrito's 2A03 synth but it doesn't have all these effects, swells, delays and all the other things you can set up in Famitracker AND it has a huge bug - when you play the same note more than one time in a row, the second and every other time the note is played is half quieter. That is a huge issue and also makes it impossible to play properly. Also that project seems to be abandoned as nobody replied to my email for a year now.

So I guess I can find some help here. Anybody can point me to how to do this properly?

Thank you.

Well, you can connect any generic Midi or USBMidi musical keyboard, do some configurations, turn edit mode off and play live. Little to no latency IME.

I'm thinking of linking up LSDJ (native GameBoy tracker) with Famitracker in the future (I'm building an adaptor from scratch).

But the key thing is I want to play on the PC keyboard. I know it's possible since it works on LordFrito's synth. But all the bugs in software disable me from playing.

The buffer. Bring that bitch down to 1ms. If you want to do full 4810 or whatever it is the highest quality is it might get choppy and you don't need to play NES music any higher than 2whatever to get full NES quality, so maybe just go down to that.

This should work for ya.

I tried that and under 24ms I get no sound at all.

EDIT: Oh I have to lower down the other frequencies and stuff too... Didn't realise that. Thanks it sure does the trick for me.

Hi again after some years... Still trying to pull this thing off.

I tried the new version and with the buffer set below 24ms there's no sound. Changing the frequencies and stuff doesn't seem to affect it. Well I can get down to say 7ms but there's no difference to my ear in the response, just a worse tone.

Basically what I want is a super quick response to the key press like with a piano... but doing it with the keyboard. Maybe some things have changed in the meantime?

EDIT: I can get to 1ms with 11...Hz and well the tone ias bad but it's quick... but could it still be quicker and not sound as bad?

Also is there a way to play chords? You know like for the C chord I would press Z, C and B at the same time. Can it be done?

Thanks man, cool software, i like the interface and the effects.

Latency will always be an issue with Famitracker as long as ASIO isn't supported. However, there are workarounds if you're just trying to record, such as recording in another tracker and converting the data.

Yeah but the whole reason is to play live. So I guess there's no workaround for the moment other than hooking up a MIDI instrument?

A MIDI instrument wouldn't be any better.

So I guess we will have to wait for ASIO support?
