I'm kind of stealing this concept from the prc, but I think it could be fun. How about a Famitracker vgm cover competition? I'm thinking something like this:
Rules:
-The admin gets to choose the source.
-The source must be a song from a video game.
-The admin decides whether expansion chips are allowed or not.
-The admin decides which and whether DPCM samples are allowed.
-The admin cannot participate in the competition.
-Competitors must submit their entry before the deadline.
-The deadline is exactly 2 weeks after the song to be covered has been announced.
-When the competition ends, all entries are made public, and voting begins.
-Participants may not vote.
-Exactly 1 week after the competition ends, voting ends, and the winner is announced.
-The winner of the competition becomes the new admin.
-The next competition starts exactly 1 week after voting ends.
Entries:
-Anyone who has heard the source should be able to recognize it in your cover.
-If your cover contains no recognizable parts of the original, it may be disqualified.
-If the source is very simple, try to make it more interesting by adding new parts.
-In any case, your job is to win the audience and make them vote for you!
-Tempo and genre changes are encouraged.
-As long as you follow the first rule, you can do whatever you want.
Admins:
-When Announcing the source, be sure to include a link to it (chiptune or mp3).
-Any game will do, but simple sources are usually more fun to work with.
Super complex chords and harmonies don't translate that well into NES music.
-Don't pick a source you wouldn't be able to work with yourself.
-Try to pick a song that hasn't already been covered by someone (including yourself).
-You are the one who gets to disqualify entries.
-If you want to allow DPCM samples, make a zip containing all the allowed samples.
-Limit the number of allowed DPCM samples to less than 10.
So... thoughts? I don't really know how this would work in practice - where entries should be submitted, how to count votes, etc...
Well, no reason, really. But I don't know how voting and submitting should be handled. Should entries be submitted by sending them attached to an e-mail sent to the admin? Where should the entries be hosted? As forum post attachments? How should voting be done? By simply counting the number of votes posted in a thread (that would make it more difficult for anyone to vote twice, or for anyone to vote on themselves or vote even though they're participating, but it'd mean a lot of work for the admin).
I'm game for this. (pun intended)
I think it'll be fun, and most of all a good learning experience for me. I'm not in this one to win. But I'll still try! =]
I think the point of the competition wouldn't be to find who is the best FamiTracker out there, but to get some more NSF's out in the open (especially vgm covers) and to give people a reason to improve their skills. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with counting votes and that stuff, but the next guy might...
If I was to count the votes myself, and everyone just sent me their stuff to my e-mail, who would be interested in participating for a first run (granted the source is interesting enough to you)?
Also, I think you should add into the rules that the entry has to be a FRESH composition for the person (i.e., for their entry, they can't just submit something that they've already done). Otherwise, I might be liable to include some that I've already done (Harvest Moon's town music, Chrono Trigger's bike race themeā¦). It'd just be more fun to see new compositions than resubmissions of old stuff.
Well... the person who picks the song can't participate, so that'll just mean that other people will do their version of Harvest Moon's town music or whatever, and hopefully, it's going to be pretty different from your version. I think it should be up to the admin to decide which song he wants, but yeah, I'll include it as a suggestion to the admin.
Oh. o.O Hm, I just read through the rules you wrote up there, and I was thinking that the admin chose the game that the contestants covered songs for, but the songs that the contestants did were ones THEY chose, not the admin. >.>
Originally, even before the re-read, I was under the impression that people just announced what game+song from that game that they were going to do, and then they'd send that into the admin or something. <.<
But what if the participant just happens to have covered that particular song already? I think it should be allowed, partly because the situation will be rare enough not to be a problem, and partly because it'd suck to deny an awesome entry merely because the participant happened to do it before the contest started. Maybe entries that were pre-made could be marked with a star or something.
I also propose the rule that the admin chooses the set of DPCM samples that can (but don't have to) be used, and has the option to disallow samples entirely. This ensures that the contestants play on a more equal footing, and that they can concentrate on the task of composing rather than looking for samples.

That's fine. If the participant wants to make it more interesting for themselves, they could always try to spice their old one up a bit.

Good idea. But it's really up to the admin to decide how many to include in this set. Either way, the admin should make a zip including all of and only these samples so people don't have to look for them.

Ok, cool.
Ok, how about I register an e-mail address (like famitracker@hotmail.com) and then I give the password to the winner, who then changes the password so only he can access it. He gives his new password to the next winner, and so on. This would be the e-mail address where you send your entries. Think that would work?
