That's right. I've started work on a huge project, that I probably will never finish this year, or next year.
I call it "...and Chiptunes for All"
As some of you probably know, Metallica just released their newest album Friday. Needless to say, it was awesome. Especially compared to St. Anger. That aside. It has inspired me.
I'm going to be recreating all of my favorite Metallica tunes in true 8-bit fashion, more than likely under the moniker "Chiptallica".
Ofcourse that's only viable for this project alone, or I would probably keep it, because it sounds cool.
Bottom line is. That's what I'm doing.
Would my fellow FamiTrackers be interested in following me along my journey? (It means you get to listen to this work in the making) For example. I'll upload unfinished portions of tracks for criticism first of all, and just for your listening pleasure.
What about the guys who download their music? They're not making any money. Oh well, good luck to you anyway. You're in for a world of trouble (making NSF's is hard).
Yeah, but downloading music that was meant to be paid for, and remaking the same music, in tribute to the band are two completely different things.
Also, I'm aware of the many technical difficulties I will be facing in the future.
That's part of what is going to make it fun, and rewarding at the same time.
The hardest part will be capturing the essence that is Metallica with only 8-bits of sound.
Another reason, is that I'm tired of seeing all these videos on youtube claiming that it's '8-bit' when all they did was import a midi to something like FL studio and added in pseudo 8-bit samples.
Yeah, me too. We'll show'em. If it ain't an NSF, it ain't 8-bit. (Well, technically, I guess Gameboy and Sega Master System songs would sort of count too). I've actually tried to emulate the NES sounds in Reason using the subtractor, but I couldn't do it. It never sounded like it was supposed to.
Anyway... the new Sawtooth channel in the latest FT beta is great for creating that fuzzy electric feeling. I don't see how you could get anywhere close to metallica using only the 2A03.
Well, Of course it isn't going to sound just like Metallica. *lafflaff* What I meant was to capture the same 'feeling'.
Now THAT I think is possible. =P
Also, when this project gets into the later stages. I want to recruit someone who's decent at spriting, and who could help me build an actual nes ROM because I may want to make this into an unofficial NES Metallica Concert Rom!
How sweet would that be?
"Yeah, me too. We'll show'em. If it ain't an NSF, it ain't 8-bit."
Also. THIS! So many pseudo 8-bitters out there, and it's SO EASY to make them. If all you're doing is copying songs that already exist somewhere in midi format.
Cool! :D I have an 8-bit (bonafide genuine 100% guaranteed — it's in NSF format) cover of that song by Fredrik Schultz — I wonder if you (or the group you get together or whatever) could do a cover. ^_^
As far as I know, they can only sue if I make money out of this.
Well, you're still infringing on the copyright, which means they can sue you. They very very probably won't, but they have the legal right to and you'd have no way to win if they do. I don't think it's really worth worrying about, but Metallica is one of the more litigation-happy bands out there.
I must say you're a lot safer if you only cover a few songs instead of a whole bunch of them, though.
