This turned out to be much harder than I expected... Using fontforge is suffering. But I'm sure I'll find this knowledge useful some time

If it was an 8x8 .FON bitmap font, you can use YY-CHR to modify another 8x8 .FON font, then hex-edit the font header to change the font name to prevent a duplicate name, then install it and you're done.
