I want to use Famitracker 0.3.7 on my Win98 machine, but it keeps saying that I need a newer version of Windows! (Ironic, right?) Will 0.2.7 or other work, or do I need the source for 0.3.7? (Y'know, to edit and compile for Win9

Use an older version for Win9x. Or, go ask this question on 4chan's /b/.

Win98? Last time I check this is 2011... Why don't you just use a newer machine/more recent software? I guess it probably isn't for me to know, but I thought it was fairly obvious that you should expect software currently under development not to work in an archaic environment...

You're best off installing Ubuntu or something as a 2nd OS and using Wine

Yes it would require a recompile at the very least. Microsoft doesn't actually sell a compiler that targets Windows 95/98 any more. (I think it stopped after VS.NET 2003)

There are things like this which claim to be a solution to the problem: [url=http://www.legacyextender.com/]http://www.legacyextender.com/

Or you might try other compilers like MinGW but I've heard getting MFC to work with them is a huge pain.

It loos like FamiTracker 0.2.7 was the last release using VS.NET 2003 before he switched to VS 2008. So... maybe 0.2.7 will run in 98?

0.2.7 does work... for my OS, it keeps forgetting my sound card
Why is it so hard to support Win98? I just use MinGW and don't use the newer libraries.
...and what's wrong with using a retro OS?!

Nothing. I still use MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, and Macintosh Plus sometimes.

The problem I see with a retro OS is that most people nowadays use a more recent OS, so much new software isn't designed with compatibility with legacy operating systems in mind.

However, Windows 2000 works great with Famitracker; I've tried it.

An old computer may not be able to upgrade to a new operating system.

Honestly it's because there are not enough people who still use Windows 98. There's no point to invest the time to support it .. it's kind of like why there were no viruses for Mac for so long, not worth making 'em.

MinGW? FamiTracker's an MFC program. Using MinGW for FamiTracker would require a rewrite.

My computer couldn't possibly handle Vista, and don't even try finding an XP disk.

Ah. Well, I just meant supporting old Windows, Mac, & Linux from the beginning.
