The "weakness" of DPCM samples depends on sample quality. If it's a really big, high-quality sample, chances are it's going to get squished and pushed to a lower volume. If you use a sample that is pretty much perfect for dpcm importing, then it will probably sound good and loud.

Also, there are wav to dpcm converters that do a far better job than ft.
