Hi guys. I wanted to hear your thoughts on this...
I found the famitracker over a year ago and fell in love with it instantly. 8bit music holds such a special place in my heart and when I discovered I could make my own music for free, I was beside myself. My growth in learning the tricks of the tracker has been slow but enjoyable none the less. And hearing what you guys create can sometimes be just as exciting as making my own piece.
Here's the thing.... I have no clue on how to make my own dpcm. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to a computer (that's why I don't have an avatar - don't know how to do it!) and the very little of what I've read on how to make a dpcm just went over my head. So I figured out how to save the dpcms of others for my own personal use. I felt a little bit guilty about it at first but then I just forgot about it. As I frequent this site now almost on a daily basis, exploring and learning what I can from you guys, it hits me that maybe it's not right that I'm doing what I'm doing.
If the general consensus is that it's no big deal, as long as I don't take credit for it and acknowledge who put the work into making them, then I will do so. If, however, the consensus is that I'm being a thief and what I'm doing is wrong, I will delete all of the dpcms I took and learn on my own how to make them.
I love this site, I love the tracker & I LOVE 8 bit music. It's a privilege for me that I get to make my own & I don't want to abuse it by pissing off a bunch of people. So please lend me your thoughts/feelings on the issue.
Thank you
I for one don't think using the samples is wrong, however, if you plan on selling your music, ask the person who created the samples. I'm not one for legal issues, but I'd do that just to be safe.
I know a lot of people who borrow leads from games like Gimmick!, SMB3, and the whole Mega Man series. As for samples that are widely available on the internet, I see no point in trying to ask because thay have alreaady been used an infinite amount of times.
Here's one of the HUGE amount of .zip folders that can be found on the internet.
I also know that I've been a FT user, Forum member, and most likely alive for less time than you, so please don't hurt me.
I make my own DPCM samples all the time, mostly it is the same few samples in all my songs. It is actually easy. You need to find or create source material first, that's the difficult part, and then just import WAV into FamiTracker.
Source could be a sample pack. That brings back the copyright problems, however, there are such great things around as 'the open source drum kit' (Google it) and some others, that have live drum samples of great quality for free.
Source could be a result of synthesis (using a freeware VSTi, for example) or even drawing a waveform by hand. You also can sample a drum machine by yourself.
I usually steal from Fruity Loops and use those in my songs, but I always convert them with rushjet1's dmc converter. It just seems like the samples have better quality than importing .wavs with Famitracker

Technology: the one thing that's hated & cursed at by all engineers, technologists, scientists & technicians!
Thanks for your feedback (even you omg_donut and whatever the hell you're talking about). I think I'll continue "Borrowing" samples from other people. If I ever do decide to sell my songs(I couldn't imagine that I would), then I'd learn how to make my own. Thank you SO MUCH Track Man for the holy grail of samples. My mouth waters every time I look into my DPCM folder. And thank you Shiru for giving me a rundown on how to make my own. I don't get it but if I sat down one day and really looked into it, I think I could figure it out.
