Okay, I'd really love it if you folks could post your best DPCM drums. I want them to be nice and loud so they can be heard over the music without having to make all the other channels really quiet (and thus sacrificing precious dynamic range), and I want them to be... like, crisp, you know? Not all muddy and muted like what usually happens when you lose the high frequencies (and thus what usually happens when you turn something into a DPCM sample). I'm looking specifically for a snare and a kick, but if you have others, I'll take 'em.

You'll probably have to do this anyway, since loud DPCM samples mean a quiet triangle channel. Then you'll have drums that are too loud relative to the other channels.

In any case you're unlikely to come across drum samples that are particularly loud without suffering distortion, because snare drums are pretty noisy, and noise is rather limited in dynamic range due to the nature of DPCM. (If you have a line that wiggles up and down a lot, then it can't wiggle up and down very far since it can only move up or down one step at a time.)

I'm just looking for the best that people have. I don't need it to be a perfectly clear sample because I know that doesn't exist. And, by the way, I'm not using the Triangle channel at all in this piece, so does that make some difference? Can I somehow increase the volume of my samples?

I'm using alot of good ones for the X3 OST I'm supposed to be working on. I think you might like some of them. Personally I like the ones I used for Gravity Beetles theme alot.

Okay, I just realized something: VRC7 seems to make the DPCM samples really quiet for some reason. Does it make other stuff quiet, too? Is this a bug? Does everyone already know about this?

VRC7 channels are significantly louder than 2a03 - this is intentional.

Yeah, the VRC7 channels themselves are. That's nice. But try this: open two instances of FamiTracker, and import the same sample into each. Set one of the two to use the VRC7 expansion. Now go back and forth between the two and listen to the samples. If things are the same for you as they are for me, then you should hear a significant drop in volume going from the 2A03-only one to the VRC7 one. DPCM volume shouldn't be affected by the VRC7 volume drop, should it?

Snares are hard? That's funny considering I can make one in seconds.

Modusponens, the VRC7 chip in famitracker makes the 2a03 quieter, on the real famicom the VRC7 is just louder. This was done, aparrently, to keep from blasting the VRC7 to epic proportions in the tracker.

Mkay.

I would totally love to do VRC7 drums (especially if someone were willing to share some good ones with me, as I've never been very good at tweaking Patch 0... hint hint....), except can't you only have one of them? If I want to do both kicks and snares, then I'm SOL, right? I mean, I could maybe use the Triangle channel for kicks, I guess. And I want to keep the Noise channel for cymbals. It's tough.

you can only have one playing at a time, you can have as many as you want, just only one can be played at a time.

And I think I have a snare saved, I'll make a kick... this'll be a sec I'm doing this while readying a server in minecraft

Thank you, the only thing is you can't seperate the VRC7 part as it's own or it sounds horrid, and can't remove it or the snare becomes air sample beside a bad noise snare, which is pretty much what it is, and if you remove the noise part it ends too fast, and you can't remove the dpcm part either...

note to self - stop making 3-part instruments, out of 7 made only 1 could have any parts seperated
