Well hey guys, I’m a little new here, and I’ve been tracking on and off for a few weeks now, but now I’m working on a really cool project.
My idea is to make an 8 bit dubstep re-mix of the original Zelda opening title.
I’m thinking between a cross of between,
This guy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSHW_iLXTac&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PL8E25EF985AA517F1
and, this other guy http://www.8bitpeoples.com/discography/by/cheapshot
So what do you guys think?
So far in my project I have used Square 1 for most of the parts, triangle for sum of the lower and quieter bass parts, and then the noise for the drums. I’m saving the Square 2 for the dubstep sounding parts. Any helpful ideas on what types of sounds and instruments I should use for that part?
Thanks for any and all the help!
I say go for it; if you can do it & you feel that you can, then do it. You could also use an MMC5 expansion so that you can add another 2 square wave channels, or you could even go for something more complex (even VRC7 if you want your instruments to sound closer to an actual synthesizer).

Technology: the one thing that's hated & cursed at by all engineers, technologists, scientists & technicians!
Closest thing to 8-bit dubstep that I've heard is a VRC6 cover of "Tank! Tank! Tank!" that used all the VRC6 channels in unison for the bassline. I'd try something like that for a really prominent bassline. A curse I've found is that low notes in NES covers I've made tend to get washed out by higher ones unless the low ones are by themselves or they're stacked like that.
I think you'll be hard pressed to recreate this kind of sound in 2A03 alone.
Thats the point
Personally I'd just do a straight cover ignoring that shitty genre, but oh well, do what you wish.
Well there would be no fun in that now would there be
I dunno about dubstep on 2A03... I can't really imagine someone being able to re-create such deep ear-raping bass notes with two square waves and a triangle, but i'd actually be quite interested to see if it would be possible.
The thing with the wobble bass (which dubstep revolves around; if there wasn't a wobble bass, it wouldn't be dubstep [s]and therefore actually sound good[/s]) is that it uses a very fast low-pass filter as I recall that, as you know, changes speeds.
My point is is that this is near impossible to recreate on the 2A03 unless you play with clock speeds, the FDS and other things, but this is too much hassle in the end.
Well my plan is too use some arpeggio, pitch, and speed trickery to make it sound like thta bass wobble. And so its not really true dub-step, but an 8 bit spin off of it. so I plan on finishing it 2night, so I'd love to show it to you guys.
I've been toying with this for a little while. I'd assume you'd be able to copy the waveform of that wobble bass instrument into like 24 FDS instruments and set the speed to 1 and... Well it would get a bit complicated.
I've gotten some very shallow wobble bass instruments in VRC7, but they don't have the power of the originals.
Also yay! Someone mentioned my Tank! Tank! Tank! song :D. Indeed, I used ANY unused channels for bass at some points, simply because it's quite difficult to get a powerful bass sound out of a simple waveform. Plus I had seen this technique used in an indie game called "Tower of Heaven" that produced some really interesting bass, which ended up just being layers of very deep 50% duty square waves at different octaves playing at once.

Haha, well yes, it is very complicated, and I havent made it just right yet, so im not finished right yet, but I'd love to hear this "Tank! Tank! Tank!" song. Where can I find it?
