I didn't wanna put this up anywhere until the compo was over, but now that it is...
This is a tune that I made mostly in FamiTracker to enter in the Summer Chip compo at BattleoftheBits.org . It was a "wildchip" category, so you could cheat a bit on format, as long as it was chip-related in some way.
So I made this with 2A03+VRC6+another VRC6+Live played 2A03 and SID samples+Analog synth processing+drums. You can read the rest of the details (and hear the tune) on the site.

I've attached both .ftm's so you can have a look at how it was done...it was a lot of work...but it won Best Overall in the compo, so it was worth it!

Thank you guys very much!
I knew I wanted to release the FTMs...just didn't really wanna do it publicly until the compo was over. It just seems more professional to wait.
@Tech - you're right, it does kinda have a Sonic feel to it! Which is not a bad thing!

You forgot to cancel out the 20C in frame 14, so when the song loops, the 2A03 squares get all weird sounding. Other than that, damn dude. This sounds like pure 8-bit sex in my ears.

Haha, thanks betasword.
I guess I may as well put a few notes as to how all this came together after leaving FamiTracker.
I didn't do a whole lot of obsessing over the FTMs since I knew they were just being used as source material - a lot of stuff like looping and some volume fades were done after leaving FamiTracker-land. I just exported WAVs of every channel (that I used) in both FTMs, then mixed them all in Cubase.
Notice how, in the final product, there are no DPCM drums or 2A03 noise to be heard! It was very necessary to make a decent noise+DPCM drum track in FT though, to get the feel right for everything else.
Once it made it to Cubase, that was all replaced with live-played cymbals and MPC drums.
Hmmm...what else...
Oh yeah - the super short instruments in the 2nd FTM were made to be triggers for the Envelope Generators on my modular synth. It just needs an audio tick/pulse of some kind to trigger it to open, and I wanted it to behave like the VRC6 was actually part of the synth. It took some doing to get it just right. I manually tweaked the filter cutoff as the track played back through the synth.
Notice though, I mixed the dry NES channels with the analog-processed ones...I tried having just the processed sounds playing, but it seemed to lose something compared to the raw FamiTracker version, so I put some of that back in there.
Another thing: echo sounds good on NES sounds just about all the time, but reverb does not! I had to try a ton of different reverbs before finding one that didn't sound really weird on those 8-bit oscillators, and even then, I had to be pretty sparing with it. Reverb tends to smear the sounds in an unpleasant way, taking away what makes those sounds special in the first place; that punchy, in-your-face sound.
The solos were the last thing I did to the tune, at the very last minute too...the submission deadline was only a few hours away when I started working on them.
They were played in real-time from a MIDI keyboard, using a VST called Plogue Chipsounds. It does a really excellent job at emulating the sound of a bunch of different chips...among them 2A03 and SID, which were the ones I used.
There are a couple of parts that I wish I'd had the time to fix/quantize...they just sound sloppy to me. I might fix them before I put this on YouTube, which I plan to do soon.
Finally, there is a 2nd part to this tune...it's kind of it's own piece, but it's a direct segue. It's a whole different sound though - all the sounds (besides the drums) are FM synths, and it's straight up jazz-funk - no more weird time sigs. I cut it at the last minute because I did not have time to finish it like I wanted before the deadline...but you will get to hear it eventually.

Chipiphany is great, it's no wonder that it won Best Overall.
Chicken Rings- I kinda wonder how this relates to chicken rings, but I still like it.
