Recently I started doing this thing with some online friends where they connect into my computer through VNC (allowing them to view my computer screen) and I call their computer and broadcast my computer's sound to theirs, and they watch me messing around in Famitracker or any other tracker. The general reaction seems to be positive, with most reporting they've learnt quite a few things after the session. Someone suggested I should make this sort of livetracking session open to the general public and use uStream instead of the complicated, low-quality and potentially dangerous VNC method.

Now, these live tracking sessions were just a little thing I did with my close friends and it usually had a specific purpose, e.g. if I was working on a track of theirs or they had specific questions they wanted answered that required me showing them examples directly. I never intended to make them a regular show or anything. But the interest seems to be there - at least for those 2-3 friends.

I'm thinking the show would probably last an hour, maybe 1.5 hours, or however long the general public seems to see fit. I'm not sure whether I'd actually talk over the tracking or not - I can't say I'm fully confident in my ability to actually speak English in public, not to mention it would probably get in the way of the music itself... Also, ideally I'd want an audience of 8-12 people, so that's the number of "Yes"'s to aim for.

Of course this is all hypothetical since the show is still in the 'project' phase. This is where you guys come in. Would you tune in to a show in which I mess around in Famitracker (and possibly other trackers/programs - you decide)? Please vote in the above poll and if the majority seems to think it's a good idea, then I'll consider making it real.

Comment away!

I've often thought of doing this myself sometime. I'd join.

It could be very educational, but I wouldn't want people to see the process of making some of my songs, they'd be online ALL night long, and the day after and after lol.

I think it's a good idea. I thought of doing this as well on my Justin.tv account but I make things at too slow a pace. If I cover something from an old game for example, I split channels of VGM, SPC etc etc, and if I need to, I adjust it so where I can literally move one note at a time for perfection's sake, nailing even complex solos. It'd be boring watching me, but I'd watch others for sure.

Looks like we've got a healthy potential audience already. I'm going to be away in New York City for the long weekend, coming back on next Tuesday, so let's wait until then and then we'll probably talk about setting a date and time for this!

EDIT: I see some people voted 'No' but didn't voice their opinion. I'm curious to know those people wouldn't tune in, so even if you're not in favour please speak up!

As for those who would watch, would you guys rather this be a regular show (say every Wednesday night at 8PM EST, for instance), or should it be on an irregular schedule to plan the broadcasts long in advance and make sure as much people as possible can tune in?

As far as my opinion is concerned, you (or I guess anyone else) can probably just stream whenever. Just post here somewhere beforehand to let everyone know so they can gather there on time.

I'm really glad you're doing this!

When I was doing a regular Ustream show weekly, I tried to keep it on the same night, but a lot of times I'd have to adjust the actual time of the show for my weird schedule.
Doing a few blasts on Twitter would usually do the trick as far as getting viewers, but I don't know how many FT'ers have Twitter.
I guess if you give enough notice, just posting the next show time here or something would work.

Looking forward to seeing/hearing!

Any of y'all who haven't hung out on Ustream before are in for some fun. Everyone gets on the chat in real time during the stream, so it's totally interactive. A great way to get to know people better.

<MOOT>

afk for a week starting tomorrow...but I'll still be checking in via my phone.

If I had more free time, I'd honestly love to see a live stream of something like this from anyone. It's almost like a college lecture where I could learn from the professor, ask questions & try to figure out alternatives (if there are any).

The same would go for even a live chat alone; the video only enhances how interactive it is. I'm just wondering why others would say no unless they're not serious about tracking music as a hobby.

Honestly if 2 of my friends hadn't suggested I do this I would've thought it was a terrible idea! I didn't think watching someone else track was so entertaining/educative, but apparently enough people find it interesting enough to warrant starting a uStream show. Not that I think it's a bad thing, mind you. :p

They're much to be said about seeing things done; a picture's worth a thousand words. It's exactly like going to a college; sure, you can learn quite a bit from a lecture, but the hands-on stuff helps to confirm what was taught in the lecture hall (& elaborate on anything that may have been missed).

I would definitely be interested in watching you stream. It would benefit me and others in learning how others track. I would personally be interested in seeing the different tracking techniques that people use other than how I tend to do it. I watch people stream Starcraft II because it helps me to learn new techniques and see what builds other fellow players use. It then helps me to improve my game Streaming the tracking would be helpful in a similar way.

I agree with TechEmporium - it would kind of be like a lecture and be able to discuss what's going on etc.

I would prefer to see it on a regular day every week but you could always change the actual time dependent on the situation. I'm not one to say so choose what days you like! I look forward to seeing how it goes!

First off, jonpon121, I really like your sig.

Looks like there's overwhelming demand for this show so I suppose I have no choice but to start doing this thing. I'm thinking Wednesday at 11PM EDT, unless that's too late for most of you, in which case 8PM EDT is good too. Or anytime inbetween. Not sure yet. I think it'd be best if each one of you guys made a post below telling me what time suits you best or, if that be the case, what other day in the week. Then we'll go from there.

Thanks dude

11pm EDT is probably a bit late for us peeps in the UK I think (that's 3am GMT isn't it?) but I think 8pm EDT (Midnight GMT) is a bit more reasonable but it's obviously heavily dependent on what the majority of the people here are cool with!

It doesn't end up being too late when I'm at university since late nights are pretty common for me , but a super late night once a week isn't too bad eh?

Just wanted to get the ball rolling!

Jon
