Whoever gets does this challenge successfully will be declared the official pagan god of the NES chiptune scene. Here's the challenge:

Do a complete cover of the intro theme to Hero Quest... In reverse!

Rules:

No 900 BPM covers with blank instruments (it implies using the NSF Importer for more than plain analysis).

No 900 BPM covers with added instruments that are forged to hide your complete reliance on the Importer (& your lack of skills in both composing & plagiarism).

Single/blank instruments are fine, as long as it's not 900 BPM.

You only need to compose the tune such that you play the main loop in reverse twice, before you conclude the song with the introduction frames.

Feel free to use [url=http://famitracker.shoodot.net/forum/attachments/19668/hero_quest.ftm]my decompiled FTM of the song (for analysis purposes only,) or hunt for the Hero Quest NSF & decompile track 1 with the NSF Importer.

First place gets a copy of some web-based (PHP) things I've tinkered with; a file upload script, download repository display script, remote flat file editing script, e-mail form script & a copy of Halley's Comet Software HCS Forum (with simple installation & database-backup scripts of my own creation). Handy things for any website (& best suited for websites that carry heavy restrictions on resource consumption).

Everyone else can dig through their sofas & couches for loose change that fell from their pockets! :P

Good Luck!

I mean, literally in reverse... As in cover the song in such a way that the notes play in reverse order.

[url=http://techemporium.camoyoshi.x10.mx/samples/introduction.mp3]An original sample of my own work

[url=http://techemporium.camoyoshi.x10.mx/samples/introduction_reverse.mp3]My sample song, in reverse

The ending is now the beginning & the beginning is now the end.

Sure, but I'll hold off until I get a release-delay command in FT. It wouldn't be too crazy with abuse of releases.

1. Do the entire cover normally
2. Select all & ctrl+r
3. ????
4. Profit!

Just pointing out a slight flaw in your otherwise interesting concept. :p

Not quite; I was implying that people should do what you just said, along with re-implementing the effects that the song previously had in reverse, as well as rearranging the frames to flow in reverse.

When I say reverse, I mean FULL reverse! :P

I took a swing at it. I'll give you a warning: It's not pleasant to listen to.

Also, bug: If you ctrl-A a column and reverse it, it pushes the whole thing down a line after reversing.

Thank you, jrlepage, for mentioning the reverse command; it made this a bit easier.

I didn't quite abuse releases, just made a TON of instruments.

Holy CRAP. Yeah, too much trouble.

Just for fun, here's an MP3 of your backwards version as is, then reversed (in audio, not FT) to play "forward". If you loop this, it's pretty far out, as it keeps doubling back on itself!

This is a good indicator of how well you did

...That's kind of awesome. I didn't bother reversing my track after finishing it, since I'd had enough of listening to it backwards by the time I finished. But to think I only got a couple things wrong when what I did was make a proper cover and then adapt the frames and instruments to be backwards (without checking it much) is pretty great.

icesoldier; you almost got it completely & correctly (if it weren't for the odd, out-of-place notes & effects here & there). You've got the justs of the contest; you only need to increase your note accuracy. Don't be afraid to use the Importer for analysis.

mootbooxle; that's smarts with your reversing icesoldier's WAV playback. A nice way of checking if the job was done well.
